A Brief History of Gaming Update

Back to Our Roots
This new focus with an emphasis upon original content and news coverage for the entire gaming industry is clearly a step in the right direction -- but even so the sense of community that was the foundation of our site going all the way back to when it was established is an element that we view with great fondness and respect. Because of that, a small point was added to our mandate: Community.
The publisher, editors, and staff writers at Gaming Update all agree that the participation of the large community that called GU home back in the day was an important element to the site, and for that reason, we mean to encourage you to participate in the new incarnation of the site, starting with commenting on our pieces -- whether they be news, previews, reviews, or feature articles.
As a valued member of the Gaming Update Community, we hope that you will feel the desire to add your voice to the process, even if it is a brief comment on your impressions of a game or event, news article or a trend covered in one of our feature pieces. You may have noticed that we have started adding requests for comment at the end of pieces on the site -- that is a sincere request! We really do want and desire your opinion!
About Our Staff
One of the crucial points in the process of refocusing our site has been to ensure that we are targeting quality over quantity -- the idea being part of the simple philosophy that members of our community would rather see a small number of quality pieces as opposed to a large number of regurgitated industry fluff. The temptation to make use of pre-prepared content is one that many sites simply cannot resist -- especially the sites that operate with a strictly volunteer staff who serve as researcher, writer, editor, and publisher all in one unpaid package that proves the proverb "you get what you pay for."
That is not how we roll.
In January of 2020 when we look back on the second decade of Gaming Update we want to be able to say that we did it right. One thing we do not want to see is piles of news articles about games that none of our readers are interested in -- which is what you get when you simply post everything that comes off of the PR Wire.
In place of that approach, GU has adopted the policy that we remain selective about the games that we cover, and the news that we share, sticking with content that is of interest to our community. This is not the easy road, it is the difficult one, but fortunately as we begin rebuilding the site in its new image and focus we have the luxury of hand-picking a staff with experience, who are dedicated to the idea of GU, and who genuinely desire tending to the philosophy that our raison d'etre is you.
Our administrative offices are based out of the United Kingdom, with editorial offices in the UK and US. Our servers sit on a strong reliable node that is connected to the backbone of the Internet, and are supported by a professional engineering and coding staff who really know their business.
The combined experience of our editorial and writing staff totals more than 50 years, and includes experience in every form of traditional as well as new media. As we build our human assets we are adding interns as part of our new staff, and by so doing we are contributing to the future of games journalism through an intense and proper training program that provides the interns with the sort of guidance and experience that has proven to be critical in developing solid skills in games journalism.
Our focus is to provide reliable, accurate, and timely news, previews, and feature content that serves the gaming community and gamers worldwide. We very much appreciate it if you let us know how we are doing by commenting on the pieces we present to you, using the comment feature at the bottom of each piece.
We consider it a valuable and appreciated gesture if, when you find that you need to send us an email telling us what you think, you send that email -- because while we are here for you, your feedback is invaluable and represents the best means by which we can correct our course should we somehow go astray.
The editorial staff at Gaming Update thanks you for visiting the site and for being a member of the GU Community!
