The 5 E3 2014 Conferences From Worst to Best

3. Microsoft

While Microsoft was the only one to opt for a “pre-show” event, the fedoras and million-dollar cars noted why that’s not a good idea. On to a traditional stage opening with Call of Duty, which pitches Titanfall a year too late. It’s impressive, at least. Forza’s Drivatar still isn’t, but then there’s Evolve. This behemoth slaying everything with its electrified tentacles is an old-fashioned showstopper. Momentum keeps going with Assassin’s Creed Unity’s cooperative display and Dragon Age Inquisition’s big open battles.

The real winner is Sunset Overdrive. From its jabs at all shooters to its face-guns, comic book blasts and nuclear explosions; its juvenile carnival ride all fits into one giant ball of entertainment. Too bad it’s followed by Dead Rising 3’s hateful re-inclusion of fun, at a price.

There’ a nonstop cavalcade of titles that follows. Halo remakes, Fable bad guys, The Witcher 3, a new Crackdown and tons of charming indie titles make their way on stage. It’s also the first we see of the new Tomb Raider or Bayonetta makers’ rolepaying game (RPG), Scalebound. Somewhere in there, Rare is now a whore that shills its goods with Conker as a promo. Early Xbox One adopters are saddled with a forgotten Kinect.

The Good:

• Evolve is a beast.

• Sunset Overdrive dominates E3.

• No pause, just games, games, games.

• Indie game Cuphead.

• Scalebound from Platinum Games could be a powerful exclusive.

• The Witcher 3 is gorgeous.

The Bad:

• Pre-show is filled with self-importance.

• Dead Rising 3 blesses fans with the opportunity to pay for things that made the series.

• Conker is being pimped.

• Kinect is dead.
