Top Ten New Video Games for E3 2012

There is plenty of potential and strength here, and an open question: just where will Defiance go?

Finding the answer to that question may end up being as much fun as playing the game itself, which judging by the trailer embedded above and what we saw at the show will be a challenging and fascinating contrast when they simultaneously launch in April of 2013; hopefully when that happens we will get answers to the questions that we asked at the show but that went unanswered: is the PC version of the game the only version that will be linked into the show or will the console versions for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 also be interlinked?

Can winning a spot on the TV show for your character -- as an extra -- lead to more complex or even a starring role if you happen to be a great warrior, an effective scrounger, or a conflict generating wanker? (Just to name a few of the character types that the producers said that they will have their eyes out for)...

05 -- South Park: The Stick of Truth

Publisher: THQ

Developer: Obsidian Entertainment

Platform: Xbox 360 + Kinect / PC / PS3

Release Date: 5 March 2013

The trailer for this upcoming video game set in the universe of South Park appears to present a fusion of The Lord of the Rings, Lord of Flies, and a post-apocalyptic South Park in which magic somehow has taken root -- of course it is South Park after all, so appearances will automatically be deceiving LOL!

"Your coming was foretold by Coldwell Banker," the powerful Wizard sometimes known as Eric Cartman explains, welcoming you (the new kid) into the neighborhood game of fantasy battle -- you know, as in LARP?

As surprising as this may sound, South Park: The Stick of Truth not only remains true to the basic roots of the television show South Park, but it also does a very fine job of observing the basic rules and roots of its chosen genre, the action-adventure/RPG!

After your family arrives at their new home in South Park, conveniently in the neighborhood of the primary characters from the show, you are urged by your parents to go out and make new friends while they "wrestle" in the relative privacy of their bedroom upstairs, clearly more interested in "breaking in" the new house than they are in, you know, you? As part of the demo briefing you meet Butters, who takes you to be introduced to The Wizard, who it seems has a mission for you straight-away -- well, straight-away once you have chosen your character class and name that is.

As long as you are OK with the name Douchebag (seriously, no matter what you choose that is what Cartman hears) once you pick your class and accept your new name, you, Sir Douchebag, are dispatched upon a critical mission: seek out the dangerous City Wok, and obtain some Kung Pao chicken for the Wizard, who it seems needs food badly...

Kung Pao chicken (AKA Gong Bao chicken) is a spicy stir fry dish made with chicken, peanuts, vegetables, and chili peppers if you are curious, originates from the Szechuan Province of China, and is believed to have been named after Ding Baozhen, a late Qing Dynasty official and one-time governor of Szechuan. By the way, if you happen to end up in Mainland China and you want to order this dish, you are better off asking for "Hong Bao Ji Ding" instead of Kung Pao since the dish's name became politically incorrect because of its association with Ding Baozhen, we are just saying...

The game is getting the full-court-press as it were, with special pre-order packs that are based upon specific outlets / Retailers that will offer gamers specific sets of special weapons and costumes, and publisher THQ confirmed at E3 that at least 5 DLC expansion packs are planned for the game, with the first three of which being offered exclusively via the Xbox Marketplace for the Xbox version of the game for a set time before they will be offered via PSN or Steam.

The game is a traditional Action-Adventure/RPG that is loosely based upon the rule sets found in games like the Final Fantasy series -- there is summoning, weapons can be upgraded using elemental items such as fire, lightning, etc., and combat is turn-based with minimal timing elements to it. There are five character classes: Cleric, Fighter, Mage, Thief, and Jew, and game play is centered around a basic questing system, so how cool is that?
