If you go for a walk with your 3DS in a bag or pocket on standby mode, the pedometer will detect steps. Every 100 steps is a playcoin and 10 is the max. Every day. After walking you can open Animal Crossing New Leaf and pay for the cookie with the new playcoins

You put your 3DS into sleep mode and walk, the steps are counted and every 100 steps get you one play-coin...

Sometimes what I do is I get the 3ds and I shake it in my hand and I get play coins faster. :D

I was wondering if my game had to be registered for me to be able to earn play coins for animal crossing new leaf or does my system have to also cause I turned my game off went for a 30 minute walk and the fortune cookie still wasn't at nooks this was the same day as the fireworks show so should it be there the next day

To get play coins, either walk around a lot with your 3DS in your pocket or keep shaking it. Both these methods work and will given you play coins which you can use on ACNL to buy fortune cookies.
