Health is one of the most important factors in this game. For this reason, it's going to benefit you to upgrade both your maximum health level, and your health regeneration rate early on in the game. Both of these will make any mission, small or main, a million times easier. This should be one of your top priorities if you're wanting to get through the main story of the game.
Now pistols are particularly useful for getting headshots and doing a lot of damage with limited ammo. You're likely to use pistols most often in this game. To double your damage and cut down on your reload time, you should buy the dual wielding pistol upgrade.
Now out of all of the upgrades, the pickpocket skill should be the first you should buy. If you're ever in a squeeze for money, this one will allow you to simply bump into people and pick up about 50 dollars per bump. You could spend 5 minutes bumping into people and make well over 10,000 dollars.
In this game, you'll be able to access an upgrade option from your phone. These upgrades will allow you to do anything from survive explosions to having infinite ammo for your weapons. Be sure to collect as much money and respect as you can simply to upgrade your skills. Be selective though. Some upgrades will benefit you more than others during certain areas of the game. The upgrades can sometimes be overlooked.
Your saints book is a small button located within your phone. It lists very small missions you can do, along with challenges you can complete. All things within your saints book are relatively easy to complete, and will progress both your money level and respect. Try to do these missions and challenges as often as you possibly can. You'll be happy you did later.
In previous games, you had to do side missions to upgrade your respect level, as your respect level was the key to doing missions. This isn't the case anymore, but it's still a good idea to do side missions. The more you do, the higher your respect level goes. You'll need your respect level as high as possible to unlock upgrades via your phone. These upgrades can make or break your ability to do a certain main story mission. Take your time with these side missions before you really start in on the main missions.
