As far as I know, you can't actually drive the shadows, but in the level where you need to go through the tunnel, you can jump onto the ramp at the back, and (I think) use the turret gun. I havent done this for a while, but I'm sure that's all you can do with them.

I know that you can use the shadow's turret, but I don't think that you can drive one.
