Question for Fable

I played the game once already and was able to activate the Teleport pad at the Guild. I am trying to play through again and I can't seem to get it to activate. Can anyone shed some light on why this isn't working?

Ppphhhhh..... I never use the teleport pad, I just use the down key on the keypad when im not moving when you hold it enough it will allow you to teleport where you desire.

It usually doesn't activate until after you've done the first quest and talked to Maze in Bowerstone.
