Gym Leaders | Pokemon Red Wiki

The following is a list of gym leaders, a biography, and their team.
"The Rock-Solid Pokemon Trainer"
Gives: Boulder Badge
Leader Brock is the first gym leader the player encounters. He uses rock-type Pokemon. He is one of the only serious Pokemon trainers in the Pewter area, and due to that he got his spot as a gym leader, and plenty of local respect. Despite this, he can prove to be an easy opponent, if the player manages to capture a Pokemon that can blast through his rock Pokemon's weaknesses.
Party:
Geodude (Level 12); Onix (Level 14)
"The Tomboyish Mermaid"
Gives: Cascade Badge
After travelling through Mount Moon, the player emerges in Cerulean, home turf to water Pokemon trainer and swimming extraordinaire, Misty. As a bit of a hopeless romantic, she has high hopes in Cerulean Cape as a future date spot. This doesn't decrease her focus in battle, however-- her Starmie can destroy an entire team if the trainer isn't prepared.
Party:
Staryu (Level 18); Starmie (Level 21)
Gives: Thunder Badge
Surge is a former American lieutenant, having served in a war in which electric Pokemon saved his life. His military career shows in his gym layout-- he has plenty of traps set to test the patience and mettle of potential challengers. His Raichu is not to be taken lightly!
Party:
Voltorb (Level 21); Pikachu (Level 18); Raichu (Level 24)
"The Nature-Loving Princess"
Gives: Rainbow Badge
Erika is the beautiful, soft-spoken girl who runs a flower-arranging school in Celadon. She is known to doze off sometimes (perhaps an effect of her grass-type Pokemon's spores), but becomes absolutely enthralled after a good battle. She is very well known and popular in Celadon, for both her battle prowess and her beauty.
Party:
Victreebel (Level 29); Tangela (Level 24); Vileplume (Level 29)
"The Master of Psychic Pokemon"
Gives: Marsh Badge
Sabrina is a psychic Pokemon trainer who has psychic powers herself. She seems to dislike battling, but her talent for it (along with her ability to telepathically communicate with her Pokemon) earned her the spot of Gym Leader. She attempts to confound the player by requiring them to navigate warp tiles to reach her.
Party:
Kadabra (Level 38); Mr. Mime (Level 37); Venomoth (Level 38); Alakazam (Level 43)
"Poisonous Ninja Master"
Gives: Soul Badge
Koga is a seasoned Pokemon battling veteran, and also trained in the ways of ninjutsu. Having previously studied medicines and antidotes, he makes his own for his Pokemon. This knowledge also makes him believe that poison-type Pokemon are superior, due to their ability to poison and weaken an opponent's Pokemon very quickly.
Party:
Koffing (x2, both Level 37); Muk (Level 39); Weezing (Level 43)
"The Hot-Headed Quiz Master"
Gives: Volcano Badge
Blaine is the fire-type gym leader of Cinnabar Island, and also a master tactician. He enjoys a good battle of the wits, and due to this, he requires the player to answer a series of trivia questions before being allowed to challenge him. He is very well-respected within the Pokemon trainer community, both for his blazing passion and his amazing intellect.
Party:
Growlithe (Level 42); Ponyta (Level 40); Rapidash (Level 42); Arcanine (Level 47)
"The Self-Proclaimed Strongest Trainer"
Oddly enough, Giovanni is battled twice before the gym battle against him-- he is the head of the criminal organization Team Rocket, although that is kept under wraps from most of the populace for a large portion of the game. He is the last obstacle between the player and challenging the Pokemon League, and disbanding Team Rocket forever.
Party:
Rhyhorn (Level 45); Dugtrio (Level 42); Nidoqueen (Level 44); Nidoking (Level 45); Rhydon (Level 50)
