There are several Characters available, and unlike previous titles, there are no Character-specific stats. Each Character, however, has their own karts (until you beat the entire Grand Prix). Using heavy characters on smaller karts will affect their weight, as likewise for light characters on large karts.

And there are four unlockable characters as well.
The four unlockable characters have their own karts as well but you can gain access to their karts without unlocking them through the 7 kart unlocking award.
