How do you save the game? Only after finishing level or what?

If you press and hold + or - when you're in the observatory then select Quit, you'll be able to save.
At the observatory, pause and press quit. You will be asked to save, press yes. Then it will say if you really want to quit. Say no. Done.
You can save when you do one of the following things:
1. Find a star
2. Get a game over
3. Find a Grand Star

You can save by pressing plus(+) or minus(-) buttons on your wii remote, that's the pause menu, and there's an option, save or quit(I don't remember well), there you can save whenever you want. Also as you know, after getting a power star or losing all of your lifes, the game automatically asks you if you want to save. Hope I helped!
