Not exactly. If you have a second controller in Slot 2, the second controller controls the hero that accompanies you, making the story a two player. They can pick up rings and take out enemies and are invincible.They can't pick up guns or ammo.
NOTE: This only works with the hero and if they go offscreen, press the left or down button and then press the the right button tand they will be right at your side.
