When the fruit is fully grown (you will be able to see fruit hanging from the tree), walk up to the tree and you will be able to "Shake" it. If you don't shake it, the fruit will eventually fall to the ground, and then you'll be able to pick it up.
So, if shaking the tree doesn't work, you don't need to worry about losing your fruit. Just pick up the fruit when it is laying on the ground below the tree.
