The main reason for the update was new Xbox related information that was given to me by a reader. I also had to change the name of this document because of it. I also added the complete scripts for the missions most affected by the Haitian-American protests that led to the creation of the Haitian-Friendly version. I also did some minor tweaks and added a Credits section. 0---------------------------------------------------------------------------0 0==========================0 | Additional Contributions | 0==========================0 --ejperlock --magnus jason --roothorick --Nick D. --Kevin Frushour --christopher greeson --Keffa --"Cloud ." --Janken Master --Chad B. --Ripperspirite --robbman --Gamefaqs Info --Josh Lupo --Kenneth Lowery --general pepper - Proofreading --GameFAQs Vice City Message Boards (PS2 Vice City Version Numbers Topic) --cheesewhizz --ChaosCreator 13 --ElCapo --denim demon --KidinHelmet 0================================0 | Other Documents I Have Written | 0================================0 X=======================================================================X | "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" Walkthrough (Strategy Guide) | |=======================================================================| | "Grand Theft Auto 3" Walkthrough (Strategy Guide) | |=======================================================================| | "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" Suggested Music List FAQ (Xbox and PC) | | (currently hosted by IGN.com) | |=======================================================================| | "The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay" Walkthrough | | (Strategy Guide) | | | | One of the earlier versions of my TCoR: EFBB guide can be found in | | the recently released book "GameFAQs Presents.....The Ultimate Xbox | | Strategy Guide" published by Future Network USA. | X=======================================================================X All trademarks and copyrights contained in this document are owned by their respective trademark and copyright holders. ***************************************************************************** /==XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX==\ 0===XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX===0 | Table of Contents | 0===XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX===0 \==XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX==/ 0=========================================0 | I. Who Am I? | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ My name is Robert Allen Rusk and I am a 38-year old hardcore gamer with about 30 years of gaming experience. I am an ex-gametester (Broderbund Software, LucasArts Games, Point Of View Computing) and an ex-arcade attendant (NAMCO Cyberstation - Pier 39, San Francisco, CA). I also own multiple systems such as the Sega Dreamcast, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Atari Jaguar, PlayStation 1, Xbox, and, of course, the PS2. I currently work at JCPenneys at one of the malls here in San Antonio, TX. Retail isn't the best job in the world but JCPenneys is a very stable company unlike some of the other places I have worked for in the past like internet service providers or web programming companies. I am also a member of the X-Otic Computer Systems of San Antonio (www.xcssa.org), a group who specializes in Linux, Mac, and other systems. It is here that you can see some of my RGB hack work in the photos section. /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | I.2. My Setup | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ This guide was written using BBEdit Lite 6.1 and a Power Mac Workgroup Server 8550/200 (with a G3 card running at 330 MHz). I view my work in Netscape 4.7.9, Netscape 7, and Internet Explorer 5.1.5 to help in seeing how it would look on the web and correcting format errors. I also played Vice City on my NEC MultiSync 3D RGB monitor using a homebrew RGB box that contains a EL1883 sync separation chip which is MacroVision compatible. This allows me to watch my movies, like "The Matrix", in RGB Analog without the MacroVision copy protection signal getting in the way. MacroVision screws up the sync signal and the EL1883 is the only sync chip that can ignore it. Recently I removed my Sony CXA-1145 RGB amplification chip from my RGB box because it would oversaturate the red and blues when I put on the Thermal Goggles in "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas". You know, as many revisions as that box has gone through I'm surprised it still works. When I do my writing and guide revisions I run my Mac (on one monitor) alongside the Xbox or PS2 (on my MultiSync 3D monitor). This way I can simultaneously play and make changes to the guide at the same time. When I want to watch my movies in RGB Analog, I use my PlayStation 2 with an my MultiSync 3D monitor. I recently hacked my (Version 3) PlayStation 2 to access the RGB video and sync channels directly from the motherboard (you can find the topic threads of my hack work in the GamesX.com RGB forum) so I would no longer need a sync chip and a GameShark to watch DVDs in RGB video. Watching my movies (and TV shows) in pristine RGB Analog is great. "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" (Extended Version) looks fantastic in RGB. So does my Godzilla movies, "Red vs. Blue", "The Matrix", "Red Dwarf", etc..... I intend to acquire one of the new Slim PS2s and do the same hack so I can take full advantage of DVD Progressive Scan playback. The version 3 PS2 can then be used for hard drive experimentation (as soon as I have all of the necessary pieces). The sound is hooked up to an old stereo box I got from Radio Shack when I acquired my first Amiga 500 about 13 years ago and it has served me well despite it's age. For my guide work I have 17 memory cards for my PlayStation 2. I have reorganized the game saves on my memory cards and I now have eight cards specifically dedicated to "Grand Theft Auto 3", "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" (Original Version (1.40)), and "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" (which uses up 15 cards). These memory cards allow me to quickly go and try out new ideas (and modify old ones) when they occur to me or suggested by others. I had gotten 100% Completion twice prior to making this document and did it four more times (two on the Original, one on the Double Pack version, and one on the Haitian-Friendly Version) on the PS2 versions. I have also done 100% Completion on both the Original and Haitian-Friendly versions for the Xbox. On one of my PS2 memory cards are game saves for the Double Pack Version (2.01) and on another is game saves for the Haitian-Friendly Version (3.00). These memory cards allow me to quickly go and try out new ideas (and modify old ones) when they occur to me or suggested by others. /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | I.3. About The FAQ | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ The main reason for this FAQ is to go into more detail about the differences between the three versions of Vice City for the PS2 and the two versions of Vice City for the Xbox. This document not only catalogs the changes within the games but also lists the packaging changes so you can help find the right version of Vice City so you can continue to use your game saves should you need to find a replacement disc. This document also lists the complete scripts for the missions most affected by the Haitian-American protest that led to the creation of the Haitian-Friendly version of Vice City. I now have FIVE copies of Vice City (PS2 - Original, PS2 - Double Pack, PS2 - Haitian-Friendly, Xbox (Original Double Pack), Xbox (Haitian-Friendly Double Pack)). I did find quite a few changes for Vice City on the Double Pack. When I initially posted my findings on the GameFAQs message boards, I got responses from others that said that these changes were also found in the PC version. Based on those responses I concluded that Rockstar tweaked the PS2 versions of both games to be more or less equal to the PC version which had some new ideas incorporated into it. However, a gentleman by the name of "magnus jason" gave me some information that suggests that these changes were made prior to the PC version..... "i thoght you might want to know that all the changes with the double pack/original were already in the pal version of vice city original so the playstation 2 original version of vice city which was realesed later in australia because of censorship issues (they had to remove hookers) has all of the changes mentioned in your guide" In one of the letters from the removed e-mail section, written by Nick D., he mentioned something about added cars: "And also i wanted to tell you i found another change they made, which is that they added a enforcer to the parking lot of the vice point police station in the DB version." After completing 100% in both the DP and Haitian-Friendly Versions I did laps around Vice City hitting certain spots where I found additional parked vehicles in the Xbox version and tried to find them in the PS2 versions: >>Love Fist Limo (VROCK) >>Bus (near Airport) >>Police Cheetah (behind the Little Havana Police Station) >>Enforcer (Vice Point Police Station) >>Securicar (in front of El Banco Corrupto Grande) After doing several laps in each PS2 version I've found that there are NO additional parked vehicles in any of the PS2 versions. This feature is exclusive to the Xbox and maybe the PC version also. There were also a few changes in the Haitian-Friendly version beyond the removal of the offending lines of script. I'll go into more detail a little later. I believe I have found most of the major changes made in all of the various versions. If you've found any that I am currently unaware of you can email me at rarusk[gnat]netzero[snot]com. /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | I.4. Grand Theft Auto 3 | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ In previous versions of the Difference FAQ I had noted a couple of changes in the DP version of GTA3. First, there was the decoy deal with "Plaster Blaster" (Ray Machowski) which turned out to be no change at all. The second issue was the change in requirements for the Health and Adrenaline Icons while doing the Ambulance Mission which I had written: "If you own the Original PS2 version, you have to successfully rescue a minimum of 50 patients (at the completion of a level) to get the Health Icon and a minimum of 100 patients (total) (at the completion of a level) to get the Adrenaline Icon for all of your hideouts during the Ambulance Mission. "If you own the PS2 Double Pack, Xbox Double Pack, or PC versions, you have to successfully rescue a minimum of 30 patients (at the completion of a level) to get the Health Icon and a minimum of 75 patients (total) (at the completion of a level) to get the Adrenaline Icon for all of your hideouts during the Ambulance Mission." And another person, Chad B., wrote me that this change might have been done before the Double Pack.... "You mentioned in your guide about a change in GTA3 where they lowered the requirements for health and adrenaline. I am mailing you to inform you that these changes were actually made in the PS2 Greatest Hits version." But another one my readers, Dan Schauer, indicated to me that there were no changes at all to the Ambulance Mission rewards..... "I have the original version (I think, unless Rockstar did multiple versions Pre-Greatest Hits, like they did with Vice City). I can say for a fact that it is NOT a Greatest Hits or Double Pack version. And I've never had the problem mentioned, that you need 50/100 patients for the Health/Adrenaline. My understanding on how it works is this. You need 35/70 patients for the Health/Adrenaline pickups to appear at your hideout (read from Minesweeper's walkthrough on Gamefaqs.com, the numbers could be a little off). But, either because of a bug, or intentionally, it will not page you until you've completed an ambulance level, or lost the level with the required number of patients saved. (assuming all in one run, with no patients saved prior to this point) Ambulance Level 7 completes at 28 patients, and level 8 completes at 36, but you do not get notified of the Health until after level 8, or if you lose level 8 with the required number of patients saved. Similarly, Ambulance levels 11 and 12 finish at 66 and 78 patients respectively. The game does not page you about the Adrenaline until the completion of level 12 (when it also pages you about infinite run), or if you lose level 12 with the required number of patients. "In the DP version, if you're good enough, you can get everything in one run because you can rescue 78 patients in the 12 levels of the Ambulance Mission." (from your FAQ) In the version I have (which is the original as far as I know), I'm able to do this too. Just pointing this out. I don't know who's had problems with the 50/100, but I never have." I went back did the Ambulance Mission on the Original Version after starting a new game. I did it in one run and Dan was right about the info he presented. So the Ambulance Mission is the same for all PS2 versions (Original, Double Pack, Greatest Hits), PC version, and the Xbox version. In one of the letters in the now removed e-mail section, written by "Cloud .", he had noted that may have been a change in one of the cheats for GTA3: "I have noticed something different about the PS2-DP that's not in the original and it is associated with GTA III. There is a cheat code for GTA III DP that you can't use in the original version. It's a cheat to be able to blow arms and heads off. A small detail but possibly worth mentioning." After finding the cheat code and trying it on the DP Version of GTA3 I found that the cheat still works. However, there is one very minor, and cosmetic, change to the DP Version of GTA3. In most instances the word "Uzi" has been replaced by "Uz-I". This is most notable with the mission title "Uz-I Money" (D-Ice). I also placed both the Original and Double Pack discs in my Mac and opened up "system.cnf" in BBEdit Lite. The version numbers were identical (1.40). Other that the "Uz-I" change, all three versions of GTA3 (Original, Greatest Hits, and Double Pack) are exactly the same. As a result I've made Vice City the main focus of this document instead of both GTA3 and Vice City together. /==XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX==\ 0===XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX===0 | II. PS2 Version Descriptions and Incompatible Game Saves | 0===XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX===0 \==XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX==/ This section goes into general descriptions and cosmetic (cover and disc) differences of all three versions of Vice City. The aim of this part is to help you avoid the single biggest issue between all three versions: incompatible game saves. /!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! | Game saves from one version will NOT, I repeat, will NOT work with ANY of | | the two other versions! | !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! \!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!/ If you try to load a game save from the Original into the (Original) Double Pack or Haitian-Friendly Version (Stand-Alone or Double Pack), the game will respond with a "Load Failure" and then will restart the game. If you try to load a game save from the (Original) Double Pack or Haitian-Friendly Version (Stand-Alone or Double Pack) into the Original Version, the game will crash at the "Loading Data" screen. This will also happen if you try to use game saves from the (Original) Double Pack Version with the Haitian-Friendly Version (Stand-Alone or Double Pack). I should note that Stand-Alone means the non-Double Pack version of the disc. There have been many topic threads on some of the message boards about someone replacing a Vice City disc because of wear or theft and realizing that their game saves will no longer work even though they thought they replaced it with a comparable disc. One of the main objectives of this document is to show you how to tell the three versions apart so if you need to replace a Vice City disc or want to play around with another version you can tell what version is what. /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | II.1. PS2 Version Descriptions | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ Listed below are general descriptions of the three versions of Vice City (American) for the PlayStation 2. The version numbers listed can be found by placing Vice City into a PC or Mac that has a DVD-ROM drive. Then use a program that can open up text files (like Notepad (PC) or SimpleText (Mac)) and open up the file "system.cnf". I've also included the shorthand for each version that I may use from time to time in this document. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Original Version (1.40) *********************** This is the version that came out on release day in October 2002. Approximately four million copies were pre-ordered (including mine) before release day. This version has several bugs in it that caught gamers by surprise. Bugs like the Cherry Popper Save Glitch and the Detonator Bug. Double Pack Version (2.01) [Shorthand: DP Version] ************************************************** When Rockstar announced that they were doing a combo package with GTA3 and Vice City for the Xbox they also planned one for the PlayStation 2 as well. They took the time to get rid of the major glitches and made other additional changes. May also be called (Original) Double Pack Version. Haitian-Friendly Version (3.00) [Shorthand: HF Version] ******************************************************* A lot of Haitian-Americans got mad about how they were represented in Vice City. They raised enough of a stink to get Rockstar to change Vice City to remove or alter references about Haitians within the game. This version was released in early 2004. This version comes as a Stand-Alone as well as being part of later runs of the Double Pack. The Double Pack Version may also be called the (Haitian-Friendly) Double Pack Version. The Greatest Hits copies of Vice City (PS2) are also Haitian-Friendly. Personally I feel that the Haitian controversy was a bit silly. Not because they got mad enough to get Rockstar to make changes but because they waited more than a year to make some noise. During that time many millions of copies were sold on three platforms (at least ten million among the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC versions). So the changes really did'nt make much sense. If the Haitians caused a ruckus before or shortly after the release of Vice City, no problem. But by waiting so long they came across as a bit slow making them easy fodder for all of the Vice City message boards. /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | II.2. Cover Differences | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ There are two major covers for Vice City: Stand-Alone (single disc) and the Double Pack. Both the Original Version and Haitian-Friendly Version come as Stand-Alones. The Greatest Hits version of Vice City (PS2) is also Haitian-Friendly. As noted earlier, the Haitian-Friendly version was introduced into the Double Pack in later production runs. When looking at the covers for the Stand-Alone discs there are NO differences between the Original and Haitian-Friendly (non-Greatest Hits) Versions. Same goes for the Original and Haitian-Friendly Double Pack covers. But there is something on the lower corner of the back cover that will help you tell the versions apart. That would be the bar code. At the very bottom of the bar code are two sets of numbers. The first set starts with "10425". This does not change from version to version so I will not use this set of numbers again. It is the SECOND set of numbers that change from version to version. Below are the four bar code numbers for the packaging variants (second number set only): X========================================X | Stand-Alone Package | | ******************* | | Original Version: 27145 | | Haitian-Friendly Version: 27388 | X========================================X X========================================X | Double Pack Package | | ******************* | | (Original) DP Version: 27300 | | (Haitian-Friendly) DP Version: 21383 | X========================================X /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | II.3. Disc Differences | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ If you look at just the disc itself there are two variants of the disc artwork. The one thing that stands out more than anything else is what I call the Disc Banner. At the bottom is the PlayStation 2 logo. The area surrounding the logo is the Disc Banner. It will come in one of two colors depending on whether it is a Stand-Alone or Double Pack Disc: X====================X | Stand-Alone: Black | |====================| | Double Pack: Red | X====================X When comparing the Original and Haitian-Friendly discs I found that there is absolutely NO differences in the artwork. Period. Although I don't have the Haitian-Friendly-Double Pack discs I can only assume that the disc artwork is the same between the OR-DP and HF-DP versions. So if you go to a used game store and they just give you a disc this isn't going to be of much help. But there is another way to tell the difference. And that leads me to..... /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | II.4. The Grenade Test | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ One of the other changes made to the Haitian-Friendly Version (3.00) is that Rockstar replaced the Tear Gas Grenades behind the Washington Beach Police Station with regular Grenades. This information, along with the Disc Banner, will help you determine what version you have if all you have is just the disc. Let's say, for example, you are at a used game store and you need to quickly determine versions of Vice City so can get the right version. First off, ask the store clerk to put Vice City in their PlayStation 2 store unit. If the clerk agrees, let the game load and skip the intro cinema. When you gain control of Tommy, take the nearby Admiral and hang a left out of the alleyway you begin in. Go up to the back of the Washington Beach Police Station and go to where the cop cars are parked. Up against the building is where the Weapon Icon is located. Pick it up: X=======================================================X | Stand-Alone Discs (Black Disc Banner) | | ************************************* | | Tear Gas Grenades: Original Version (1.40) | | Regular Grenades: Haitian-Friendly Version (3.00) | X=======================================================X X=======================================================X | Double Pack Discs (Red Disc Banner) | | *********************************** | | Tear Gas Grenades: Original DP Version (2.01) | | Regular Grenades: Haitian-Friendly DP Version (3.00) | X=======================================================X /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | II.5. Replacement Hints | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ All new copies Vice City on the store shelves at all of the major store chains are of the Haitian-Friendly version (Stand-Alone and Double Pack). For versions 2.01 and 1.40 you will probably have to go to a used game store to find. Insist on trying out the disc using the Grenade Test explained above to help you make sure of the version you are going after. You can replace a Stand-Alone disc with a Double Pack disc (and vice versa) but only if it is a Haitian-Friendly Version (3.00). All of the above information should go a long way in helping you tell the versions apart so you can get the version you need to allow you to continue using your game saves. /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | II.6. Detonator Bug | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ The Bug 0=====0 On the southwest part of Viceport (in the big open area just east of the Airport), you will find 8-Ball's car shop. Here you can set up your car with a bomb just like you could do in GTA3. Just park the car and detonate it at your leisure from a safe distance. When you exit the car, you will see the detonator icon in your weapon slot. Press Circle to blow up the car. But when you press R2 or L2, you will find that you are stuck on the detonator - you can't switch to another weapon. This can be quite distressing. This also happens with the Remote Grenade weapon when you throw the grenade and it switches to the Detonator part of the weapon. Dealing With It 0=============0 The reason for this, based on several sources, has to do with the Infinite Ammo Feature that you earn when you get 100%. The Detonator weapon was not designed to have any ammo and the program gets confused when it has infinite ammo and it switches to the Detonator. There are, however, a couple of ways to get rid of the Detonator..... >>Get wasted or busted. >>Go through a metal detector at either the Leaf Links Golf Club or Escobar International Airport to remove your weapons. Then go back and get all of your weapons except the Detonator. Of course, you can just not use the weapon at all after getting 100% completion. /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | III.2. Cherry Popper Save Glitch | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ The Bug 0=====0 One of the nastier bugs within the PS2 Original Version is the Cherry Popper Glitch. When you open the property you can save there just like any other property in the game. However, on occasion, your game save can become corrupted when you save there thus forcing you to start your game over again. It doesn't do it every time but each time you save there you're rolling the dice betting your game save doesn't frag. Dealing With It 0=============0 The best way to avoid it is simply NEVER to save there in the first place. /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | III.3. Little Havana Glitch | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ While perusing the GameFAQs Vice City Message Board I came across a topic concerning the Little Havana Glitch started by one of the "gods" of Vice City, robbman. Below is what he had to say on the topic (with a little embellishment)..... "I think people don't know or don't think about this glitch when playing. That's why I made this topic." "Later in the game you will be able to get the Little Havana Outfit. Though there is a glitch which puts the Little Havana Outfit behind an invisible wall. "All you need to do to avoid this glitch is to do the mission "Copland" (Tommy Vercetti) before you do Avery Carringtons last mission "Two Bit Hit". To be honest, I've never encountered this bug regardless of what order I did the missions (of course, I've rarely use the outfit too). Still, this appears to be a pretty solid strategy to help avoid this bug. /==XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX==\ 0===XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX===0 | IV. "Trial By Dirt" Altered | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ Change 0====0 The "Trial By Dirt" mini-game has been altered. The rain, Haitians on motorcycles, and barrels won't show up when you do it the first time. The second time around, the barrels will appear. If you beat your best time, rain will appear on your next attempt. If you beat your best time again, the Haitians on motorcycles will appear an your next attempt. Also they fixed the stat glitch for "Trial By Dirt". The stat glitch was that when you played the mini-game, the stats for that mission would not show up until you played "Test Drive", the mini-game with the Landstalker, and only with the same time as that mini-game. This was basically a minor problem since it didn't affect getting 100% completion or cause other problems in the game. Notes 0===0 I guess that Rockstar must've felt that they were throwing too much too soon for those playing the mini-game so they altered it to have a more gradual difficulty curve. /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | IV.2. Song Removal | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ Change 0====0 The Lionel Ritchie song "Running With The Night" (Flash-FM) has been removed from the Double Pack version. Notes 0===0 Either Mr. Ritchie or his record company wussed out here. His loss. However, the removal of this song does NOT constitute censorship. Censorship is when government or a political group forces a change in a publicly seen work. The "Kill all the Haitians" flap for GTA: Vice City can be seen as censorship but the removal of this one song was a decision made by the artist or record company. But one of my readers, Josh Lupo, suggested that this change may have occured shortly after releasing some of the early copies of the DP Version overseas..... "Hey. I would just like to report something about my Double Pack Version. I'm from Australia and I got my DP at Christmas. The things is, my Flash FM has that Lionel Ritchie Song "Running With the Night". I don't know why, so I thought you may be able to tell me why." Any clues? /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | IV.3. Weapons Renamed | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ Change 0====0 Many weapons have been renamed. Colt .45 = Pistol Python = .357 Spaz Shotgun = S.P.A.S. 12 Ingram Mac 10 = Mac Uzi 9mm = Uz-I MP5 = MP Ruger = Kruger PSG-1 = .308 Sniper Also some graphical changes were made to some of the weapons which can be seen when at the AmmuNation. Notes 0===0 Although the graphical changes are OK I felt that changing the names of the weapons was uneccessary. However, I did get an e-mail from a gentleman named "ejperlock" that gives a possible reason for changing the name of one of the weapons..... "i think i know why the name for the ruger has been changed. In real life their is actually a gun comapany named ruger and I guess seeing thier name on vice city they didn't really think that was a good thing for thier company since thier moto is 'arms makers for reasponsible citizens'. I guess they don't think tommy is responsible lol. I wasn't sure if u knew that or not." Another gentleman, named "Keffa", gave me a more detailed explaination on the name changes..... "The most likely reason for them changing the name is simply economics. The words Uzi, Ruger, Ingram, MP5, Spaz, Python and Colt are all trademarks in the same way that Coca Cola and Pepsi and Adidas and so on are trademarks. If you wish to use the names you have to obtain permission from the trademark owner and pay any licensing fees they wish to impose. They are referred to as "licensed" guns when used in games and the developers often have to pay them a royalty to use the name. Rockstar probably wanted to avoid having to pay any more royalty fees to the individual gun manufacturers. It's exactly the same reason why they do not use real car names with the vehicles even though we can clearly see they are intended to be famous brand cars and other vehicles. If they have done it with the double pack edition of the two current GTA titles then I am guessing they are probably going to adopt the policy for future versions of the game. However as with the cars, I think this would be somewhat advantageous. After all, I'm pretty certain I read somewhere the other day that the car names in the GTA games have almost as much brand awareness as the cars they are pretending to be." And another reader, "Gamefaqs Info", offered a more interesting reason for the name changes..... "I read on a website that the gun name changes were due to soccer moms speaking out about some random crap. I'm not sure why, but that's what I read. Meh." /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | IV.4. Easier To Get Cop Uniform | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ Change 0====0 The number of cops wandering around on the first floor or the locker room in the Washington Beach Police Station have been reduced. When you earn the Cop Uniform, it will be inside the locker room. However, when you enter the room to get the uniform, you will get a 2-Star rating which will go away when you get the uniform. Unfortunately, there always seems to be a cop inside the locker room who will shoot at you, taking off armor or health, while trying to get the uniform. So Rockstar tweaked it so that there are fewer cops to hurt you while getting the Cop Uniform. Notes 0===0 A welcomed change. It wasn't fair losing chunks of your armor while trying to get the uniform while a cop was inside the locker room (which was most of the time in the Original version). While there is the occasional cop wondering on the first floor in the DP version, most of the time he won't be in the locker room so you will have a much easier time getting the uniform. /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | IV.5. Boats Sink Differently | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ Change 0====0 When you sink a boat, water will gush from it's sides and sink stern first. Notes 0===0 An interesting change but I think the time it takes for a boat to sink may change the boat generation rate for the rampage on the wooden platform in the water (Rampage 1 in the Brady Guide) so fewer boats show up for that given rampage making it harder (although I have since learned that you may get more boats to shoot at depending on the time of day.). /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | IV.6. Detonator Bug Fix | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ Change 0====0 The Detonator Bug has been fixed for the DP version. The Detonator Bug (Original Version) occurs when using a car bomb or Remote Grenades in conjunction with Infinite Ammo (either with cheats or by getting 100% completion). After using the car bomb or Remote Grenades, you are stuck on the detonator because the detonator wasn't meant to have any ammo and the game gets confused when using the remote with Infinite Ammo on. Notes 0===0 Another welcomed change. Although these weapons weren't used much it is good to have this particular bug fixed. /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | IV.7. Blurriness For "Boomshine Saigon" Reduced | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ Change 0====0 The blurry vision in "Boomshine Saigon" is far less in the DP version although the screen will still swerve around. Notes 0===0 At first I thought this was to make it easier for beginning players but a gentleman by the name of "christopher greeson" offered this observation..... "In your guide on gamefaqs to the differences between GTA3 and Vice City in respect to the Double Pack versions you mention that in GTA: VC the boomshine mission's motion blurring has been lessened. You also mentioned that it may be due to the fact that they wanted to make the mission a bit easier. The actual reason is that when they ported over Vice City to the XBox they got a little lazy. Motion blurring requires programmers to create complex algorithms that are very specific to the hardware. Thus you might say, because they didn't recreate the algorithm specifically for the XBox, that the XBox emulates the effect. Because they fixed a whole bunch of bugs when developing Double Pack for the XBox, when creating the PS2 Double Pack they translated the XBox's code back over to save time and money. That's why this alteration appears in the PS2 version as well. A similar circumstance can be seen in Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance with its weather effects and its stylistic motion blurring." /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | IV.8. Cover-Up For "Recruitment Drive" | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ Change 0====0 In the opening cutscene for "Recruitment Drive" (Interglobal Films Asset), the big breasted woman with the pasties (?) is now wearing a halter top instead. Notes 0===0 This was probably not a bad idea. In the Original version she was wearing pasties (who wears pasties in a porno film anyway?) or she had some weird looking nipples. Giving her a halter top makes things look a little more natural (unlike her breasts.....). /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | IV.9. Cherry Popper Save Fix (?) | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ Change 0====0 Recently, I had a reader, roothorick, suggest to me that Rockstar may have fixed one of the more annoying bugs in Vice City..... "I have the double pack version of Vice City, and every save I make at the Cherry Popper ice cream factory appears to load and start just fine. Is there a known sure-fire way of triggering the bug or is it purely by chance? Because as far as I can tell, in the Double Pack version the bug has been fixed. This might also account for the incompatible saves issue..." Notes 0===0 I have never had a problem with the Cherry Poppers glitch since I learned from others not to save there in the first place. So therefore I have no direct verification of the fix hence the question mark. /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | IV.10. Rain And Blood Droplets Toggable | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ One of the letters from the now removed e-mail section, written by Kevin Frushour with additional comments from another reader, he mentioned the lack of splatters from rain or blood: "I've noticed that in Vice City when you drive in the rain and when you use the chainsaw there are no longer spatters or droplets of water or blood on the screen. I'm playing with the display setting "trails:off" though -- I don't know if that affects it." "I'm also having some trouble with the Sparrow helicopter (and checkpoint mission) that was in the fenced in yards near the Pay & Spray and Mercedes' house (and save point). When I played the single pack there was a helicopter there, but now it's gone AWOL. Don't know if I've just not hit the trigger in the game that allows it though -- I just opened up the west island ("mainland"). I last did The Avery Carrington Hatian crime lord mission, and it's still not there." "The double-pack VC is much cleaner looking, IMHO. I thought that the single edition looked way to grainy." With additional comments from "Janken Master"..... "In your vice city double pack changes guide on gamefaqs, Kevin Frushour said that the blood and rain on screen effects disappeared, this probably was the trails off thing, I have the double pack and when I mangle unsuspecting bystanders there is still blood on the screen and the rain still hits the screen too." After playing around a bit on both the DP and HF versions, I've found that you can toggle the splatters on or off by using the Trails option in the Display section. You turn on the splatters by turning the Trails on and turn off the Trails to turn off the splatters. You can do this in the Original Version also. If you turn off the Trails at the beginning of the game you will get rain and blood splatters. To turn them off, you turn on Trails then turn them off again. I should also note that the Chopper Checkpoint Mission that Kevin had problems getting to activate can only be turned on by completing "Rubout" (Ricardo Diaz). /==XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX==\ 0===XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX===0 | V. (Auntie Poulet) >>"Dirty Lickin's" (Auntie Poulet) Notes 0===0 This is the primary reason that the Haitian-Friendly Version exists. As I said before, the Haitian protests were kind of silly because they waited so long to say something. However, Rockstar made the diplomatic choice and did the changes to appease them. The complete scripts for all of the affected missions (except "Guardian Angels" (Colonel Cortez)) will be presented in Section VII. /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | V.2. Tear Gas Replacement | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ Change 0====0 The Tear Gas Grenades that were behind the Washington Beach Police Station have now been replaced by regular Grenades. Notes 0===0 An interesting decision. The Tear Gas was hardly used and could slow down the PS2 under the right conditions. I've heard from a couple of sources at local game stores that the Tear Gas Grenades could really slow down the PC Version so they took it out of later runs. So when they decided to do the Haitian-Friendly Version for the PS2, they decided to do it here too. This change may be the primary reason for the incompatible game saves between this version and the other two versions. /=========================================================================\ 0===========================================================================0 | V.3. "Trial By Dirt" Stats Rebroken | 0===========================================================================0 \=========================================================================/ Change 0====0 The "Trial By Dirt" stat glitch which was fixed in version 2.01 appears to have returned for version 3.00. Notes 0===0 Interesting. This may have occured while Rockstar was making changes to the Haitian-Friendly Version. But time constraints due to the Haitian protests may have kept them from refixing the bug. /==XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX==\ 0===XX====XX====XX====XX====XX====0##***##0====XX====XX====XX====XX====XX===0 | VI. After reading the previous version of this FAQ he checked the bar code on the back of his Double Pack copy. He noticed that it was a sticker that covered another bar code. After reading his letter I tracked down a copy of what he determined was the Haitian-Friendly version for the Xbox. Just like in the PS2 versions, the Xbox versions also have the game save incompatibility issue. However, the Xbox will make another Vice City game save folder instead of overwriting the older one so you can have two Vice City folders on the hard drive. There are also no changes in the packaging and no Grenade Test (since there was never any Tear Gas in the Xbox version) to help sort things out. Outside of the script changes for the Haitian/Cuban missions there is only one other change to note: >>They fixed the Pedestrians Go Silent bug. The Pedestrians Go Silent bug was a glitch that caused the pedestrians to go quiet even if you hit them with a car. Unfortunately, this fix introduced more sound glitches so the game actually sounds worse. "Guardian Angels" (Colonel Cortez) isn't covered here because only a couple of words were changed during the course of that mission. I went and copied the sections of text from the "american.gxt" files for both of the Original and Haitian-Friendly versions (PS2) and pasted them into new text files. Then I went and arranged things and went over the missions to make sure I did them right. Each script listed are broken into two parts: Original Version and Haitian-Friendly Version.
