Wirt's Leg is used later on in the game to gain access to the secret Cow Level. Once you have the Horadric Cube, you put Wirt's Leg in, along with some other item I cannot remember, and press that button to combine the items. Then a portal should open up to the secret Cow Level.

Just checked out the User Submitted Hints section. Apparently you transmute Wirt's Leg and a Tome of Town Portal. Be careful though, I hear the Cow Level is tough!
