Question for Animal Crossing: Wild World

Hi peeps
I've got some questions about Wifi. How do you know when any of your friend's gates are open? What does the the little green circle mean next to my friends' name on the the friend page? Why is it that even though I have alot of friends that i've added, and I think have added me, nobody is ever on? And when the dog is searching for distant town, does the little purple flashing squares down the bottom mean that Wifi is working, or that it hasn't finished looking?
Thanks to anyone who can answer any of these questions, because I'm having a hard time with Wifi, i've never been to anyone elses place nor have they been to mine :(

The green circles mean both you and your friend have registered each other on your friend's lists.

It's sometimes hard to find people on Wi-fi, try to organize a specific time. Or play at different times of the day.

And the purple squares are of no importance, they just show that your Wi-fi connection is ok.
