You must plant the flowers diagonal to each other. Time varies on the flower.

You have to plant flowers by each other. Animalxing.com has a great hybrid guide so I suggest you go there.

You have to put flowers next to each other. Normally it takes a few days to get a hybrid. Here's a cool one- Put two red roses next to each other and wait until you get a black rose. Then water a dying black rose (some people say it doesn't have to be dying but I'm not sure so try both anyway) with a golden watering can and it grows back as a gold rose which looks really cool and can be sold for a few hundred bells. Hope this helps!
