Behind that spinning pillar in the left corner is an alcove - when you get near it, a message will pop up telling you to make a sacrifice to the God of War. Get out a weapon like your Falcon, Devastator or Callisto, look down at the altar and hit the B button to lay it down as a sacrifice.

iv been trying off and on for six years...

i just beat him. its good to conserve your ammo by using callisto on high impact mode. when u reach the leader, use the reaper on him and the mauler when u run out of ammo use the mauler charge up mode to lower his shield and he will crouch in the middle then the shrine behind him is vulnerable. shoot off a piece then repeat shooting the boss and shrine till u have destroyed the shrine
