Animals live until they are killed by a player or by drowning/falling off a cliff/into lava etc.
They don't need to eat or drink though sheep need to eat grass to grow from being babies and to grow back wool if you shear it off.
They don't die naturally/of old age

My animals keep disappearing in my cages except my cats, dogs and horses, mules ect.
They stay for about three minecraft days and then they disappear and they are nowhere around the cage. All my animals also have water and are nowhere near lava.
Does anyone know what's going on??

My animals do this too so I have to breed them regularly if I want milk, wool, meat, etc . The only explanation I can think of is that they get struck with lightning, catch on fire, and die. (And I did see this happen, twice, once a long time ago and one time recently, with a baby horse that caught on fire and became and baby skeleton horse. It was freaky as all get out.) It does not have to be raining for lighting to strike, but I do seem to notice a drop in livestock after a storm. Also, I'm on Survival: peaceful, but I think monsters (mods) can attack the animals (???). They do not die of old age... neither of dehydration, I THINK.

Okay, so sometimes they despawn if you aren't within a certain amount (I don't remember how many) of blocks of them, they cannot die of thirst, old age, hunger, or Mobs (the only way a mob would kill one is if it is in front of you when they hit repeatedly, or if your animal is a dog and is defending you), I have never heard of lighting and will look into that. Sheep, rabbits, and llamas get killed by wolves. Chickens get killed by ocelots. But if you are far away and come back after a while and most of your Animals are gone, they probably just despawned.
