You need to make a stone pickax. Not wood.

You first need to find the right kind of stone to make a stone axe then dig for iron

Go to the edge of the Earth and dig down. After a little bit of digging (20-30 blocks) make a big area around yourself and you normally find a bunch of major ores.

If you want to make a furnace you need to find regular stone, for example in a mountain. Then you get a pick axe, a wooden one will do fine.you mine the regular stone and it will give you cobblestone. Collect the cobblestone. You will need 8 blocks. Now go to your crafting table and create your furnace!
(for mine craft PE)

You need to go to the edge of earth and dig down really deep. Be careful getting out of your hole, though.

Go to the edge of the map. Go all the way down to the bottom of the map till you get to obsidian (the black, white and gray block that you can't mine) and build 3 blocks up and dig all around. U can usually find ore.
