To get coal in survival you first dig into rock enough that you can make stone pickaxes then dig down. It always works for me so if it does not work for you somethings wrong with your hand held device

Coal Alternative: Use the woods (not yet turned into planks) from a tree, put it in furnace. Use a fuel like stick. After smelting, it should be a charcoal.

If you mine deep enough into the ground you will hit rock. Mine around into that and you can also find coal.

You have to mine coal with a pickaxe, same goes for stone, you maybe need a stone pickaxe I'm not sure. You do need a stone one for iron, and an iron one for diamond.

I believe there is a chance of receiving coal if you strike gravel with a stone or ++ shovel, much like receiving seeds from grass. I may be wrong though

Just Dix down a few blocks until you find stone once you find stone dig down about 1-8 blocks and then dig around you. It worked about 1/2 or 1/3 times. When I do I either find coal, iron ore or coal and iron ore at the same time.

This has happened to me to but then I figured out that you can find coal on the outside of a mountain only a little bit it's usually really high so I would suggest you lf you looked up. You can also find it by going down diagonally. Well I hope it helped you.😝😜😋

You have to use a pickaxe otherwise it doesn't come out, and you can find coal as these blocks of stone with black dots on them. They are found on high mountains or while mining.
Hope I helped!!!

Coal is found by digging down into dirt. You can also look at mountains of stone, and if you see black dots, you have found coal. You can also put wood in a furnace, and get fuel, which can also be used to make torches,
