When you're in the crate maze, you can't kill him. Concentrate on getting out. When he drops down from the celing, fire a few Striker rounds into him and he'll back off.
When he attacks you the second time, he'll take a lot of ammo. Normally I buy a Rocket Launcher from the Merchant before this battle. Hit him with the Rocket Launcher. Then fire a few Magnum bullets (Broken Butterfly or Killer7, it doesn't matter which) into him and he'll die. If you don't have a Magnum, shoot him with you Shotgun/Riot Gun/Striker a few times and he'll also.....pass away. If you don't haev a Rocket Launcher handy, keep running around the central pillar, shoot the explosive old canisters as he approaches and is within their range. Use the switch doors wisely, they should enable you to get a few decent shots on him. IMPORTANT NOTICE: At one point the beast will pretend to be dead. Don't be fooled by this, only approach it after the death cutscene to grab your gold.
IMPORTANT NOTICE #2: Try to save some of your Magnum ammo for the forthcoming boss, Jack Krauser, as they'll be a big help in that fight. Or you can just speak to the upcoming Merchant and upgrade your Magnum's capacity while it has no bullets or ahs not been reloaded. This will get you free bullets.

Ok first turn around run pick up the ammo and the green herb on the ground. Then around the big rock in the middle of the room and spin around blow up the red barrel when he gets close to it then run into the cave after opening the gate. Now hurry!!!! Close it spin around and unload with your most powerful gun but be fast cause he can break through and he will. There will be another red barrel blow it up then through the second gate and repeat what you just did. Now this I think is the tricky part keep running around the big rock spin around every so offten to look for him and unload but leave yourself enough time to run before your hit by his Plaga. When you do enough damage he will drop.....but he aint dead so don't let him fool you. Now RUN!!!!! He should do three to four sissior attacks behind you keep running around the big rock doing as you did before. Note: when he gets back up he seems to run faster so play it smart you can hear his steps slow down thats when you turn and wait to see him come around, he will go underground use the a/b, l/r combos to dodge his attacks. I used a striker/punisher/semi rifle,thermal scope for this and well the better part of the game. GOOD LUCK

If you can trap "It" between the two portcullises, you can pick him off at your leisure because he can't break through them.
