No. You could do like, red and crystal or gold and crystal, but only ruby to sapphire or emerald to sapphire.

No, just with Ruby & Sapphire and other games made after those.
Nope- it even explains in the rulebook. Sapphire only trades with Ruby, Sapphire, Fire Red, and Leaf Green (4 leaf green and fire red you need to have got a sapphire 2 trade with sapphire- like so you need a ruby to trade with ruby. Weird but true)
