Game shark malfunction?

I bought a gameshark that I put my Pokemon saphire game into and attach it to the DS. I am prompted to choose the item I want. If I choose an item like masterballs, it works but if I try to get a Pokemon throught the cheat code, it says it will appear in the slot 1 of the pc. So I choose a Pokemon like Celebi and it acts like it will work but when I go to my pc, nothing happened. No the slot was empty before I did it too. I can't figure it out. Please help me.

Cheating devices have a tendency to temporarily or even permanently mess up the coding in your game. Try an encounter code instead, where you encounter any Pokemon you want to in the wild, and proceed to catch it. You could also try saving a slot in your party for it so that it'll go there instead of to your PC.

There's also the possibility that the codes you are using are fake. If you received them from a secondary source, chances are, they could be.

The reason they are not working is that you cannot use a GBA Gameshark on a DS. You have to use a GBA or GBA SP. I've had this happen to me and then realized I needed my Gameboy Advance again.
