Now I know that I need either a gameshark or action reply to use codes on a game boy, but which would be better? I'v read reviews on both and people mention that they corrupt the games and lose all data. Tell me all that you know.

Both of them are just as good as each other and both carry the same risks so it is basically down to choice, I would simply buy which ever is the cheapest.
I think a gameshark would only damage your GBA if you use it to many times, so only use the cheat 2 to 4 times or less. I don't know about action replays though.
Action replay can ruin you game, but I just started over and it's fine. I hear that gameshark can like ruin game completely
Well I say action replay is better but be careful what codes you use so do not use all TM/HM code because you will get the all of the HM's but no TM's and you when you buy one it just disappears. Another thing is don't turn on to many codes on at once. Also when using encounter codes use only one at a time and don't use the Mew code or Deoxys encouter code because they wont lisin no matter what. Also do not use walk through wall codes unless your sure it wont mess up your game because depeding on your game you may get stuck in a wall when you try facing the elilte four but this rare and only happend on my freinds game so I doubt it will happan but it only happens when you don't use the action replay but it's really rare.
If you use codes to a Japanese game, you may start from the beginning.
