Well, that depends. Is the cord link that you are supposed to use(forgot the name of the cord) is connected properly. Often times it, being the waiting message, will stay up on the screen forever until either you, or your friend, tries to fix the cable. On the other hand, it may not be the cable at all, it could just be that you two did talk to the woman at the same time. That is what I do, and then the connection always works out great. If that does not work, then try using the cord on two other gameboys. That way you can see that if the cord works, something is wrong with your game. If is is the cord does not work, then you know that you need to buy a new one.
