Is it possible to link Pokemon Emerald with either Pokemon BLue or Red? For the sake of trading items?

If you really believe that you can trade from emerald to red or blue, you're sadly mistaken. The only games compatible with red and blue are: Yellow, gold, silver, crystal. Emerald is only compatible with: Ruby, Sapphire, FIREred, Leafgreen. So sorry, you can not link emerald and red/blue.

No, it's not possible to link with any games lower than Fire Red, Leaf Green, Ruby, Sapphire, or another Emerald. Basically only the GBA games. It sucks, I know...

No. It's impossible to link, trade, battle, or do any other form of communication with Pok�mon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, or Crystal.
