Foolishly I've already used my masterball and consequentlty I can't catch latias, all the guides tell you how to find it but I've run into it several times and it always flees before I can attack therefore I can't put it to sleep. Any advice?

Gyarados is water and flying.

Catch and train a wobbufet. Its special ability will trap it.

Riku994 answered:

You must get a REALLY fast Pokemon such as scizor or sceptle and teach it false swipe. Then get latias down to 1 hp. Than get another Pokemon that knows mean look and use it on Latias. Then try to catch it with Ulta balls.

jwigel1 answered:

Train some faster pokemon... Even if you inflict a little damage before Latias flees, it will still be wounded when you find it again and you can whittle it down until it's good for catching.

You can also stop Latias from running by using Mean Look (Golbat can learn it, but he's weak to psychic so it's a tough fight).

Gyarados is Flying/Water, not Dragon.

goldentrainer_2003 answered:

Well, if you have a Golbat/Crobat that knows mean look, DO SO!!! Mean look is always an attack that strikes first, for some reason.

Good news is that Lati@s can't escape because they don't know roar or whirlwind... Anyway, do so and weaken it with a pretty weak attack, just so it won't faint. Until it hits the orange zone, or the red zone would be better.

Then, throw your ultra balls at it. Lucky me, I caught my Lati with only one ultra ball. (Well, he was asleep...)

And, Gyrados would technically be refered to being a dragon, but is really a water/flying Pokemon (anyone knows why it is a flying type? That's crazy!)

Anyway, rate this answer.

Leiger40 answered:

To catch Latias (or possibly Latios for other readers with the same problem), do one of the following:
------------------------
1. Try to win the master ball at the Lilycove Dept. Store (exact ID no. Match)
2. Trade a master ball from another Pokemon game (i.e. R/S or FR/LG).
3. [best choice] Obtain a Pokemon with an ability that will not allow Latias to run,
and then you will have the chance to catch it (as long as that Pokemon does not
faint). Such an ability would be "Arena Trap" - but there are others.

Hope I helped...! : )

Sorry, but I forgot the second part of your question.

Yes - Gyarados IS a dragon pokemon.
I'm pretty sure he's also a water-type.
