I have two questions:
 
 1. Who is the green pig like guy on the very right hand side of the screen on the start up screen?
 
 2. You know that huge rock near the Winter Mine? I go up to it and it says Your hammer is level 5, but you cannot break this rock. Why?

ANSWERS

1. The pig like guy in the front screen is Van. He only appears after you have connected with Harvest Moon A Wonderful Life on gamecube. But you need a gamcube trade cable and AWL( a wonderful life) on gamecube too >>.

2. They put that there cause they want you to look for the cursed tools...to break the giant rock you need a cursed, blessed or mythic hammer. To find the cursed tools you have to dig in the winter mine with empty tool slots and to bless them you have to...naaah it's too long of an explanation, go look on this page, lot's of people have answered that question already :P
