If you are having trouble selecting the starter Pokemon then choose mudkip.

Then when you're in the game raise it to lvl 16+ before versing Roxanne.

By the way, this is my 1st ever submission. So I do hope this helps you.

P.S. Choose to start with mudkip on ruby, sapphire and emerald. It makes it really easy!
