you need to change the battery

The battery on my silver game was also apparently dead, but replacing the battery, as was suggested above, did nothing to solve the problem. Are there any other suggestions? My saves don't hold.

The same happened to me, my saves don't hold even though I changed the battery... help?

My battery is fine...is there another solution?
Flareon Dude_ answered:

It is possible you damaged the game, recently, messing around with it's saving abilities.

If so, like, spilling soda or something on it, then I would suggest you either get a new game, or take it to your local hobby shop/gaming store/etc. To get an "expert's" opinion.

this not a virus or whatever mine wont save either but other games will
Decrepitangel answered:

First off, let me just say that this is not a virus or sickness of the game of any sort.

The only reason that I know what is wrong with it is because my Pokemon Crystal game did this as well. THERE IS ABSOLUTLY NOTHING YOU CAN DO! The problem lies within the external save feature embedded inside of the game itself. Sometimes, if a game has been mistreated, gathered to much dust, or is just worn out it will stop working. In game boy games, the external save is seperate from the internal save feature. Thus, when you do in-game reset your file will be there still. However; if you want to turn off your game, your file will be automatically deleted when the external drive tries to enable itself. My best advice is to buy a new game, or you could take it to a game programmer and they could attempt to fix it but there is no telling as to what they may charge you. Sorry for your loss (I'm still trying to fix my crystal version after it did the same thing about a year or so ago but my programmer friend told me that it is more trouble then it is really worth).

actually, if you open up your game cartridge, youll see a big round battery in the corner, just replace it
pokeflame answered:

TRY AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!!!

If it's not working, this means that inside the game a special chip was lost that allows you to save. If you can save, but it only lasts for about 5 minutes, this means that your saving chip is badly damaged. Either way you have to get a refund or buy a new one P.S. This game is very rare to find in stores i'd reccomend eBay, or gamestop.

cheating-is-good answered:

Oh yes, this has become quite common with a lot of Pokemon Silver games. I hate to tell you this, becuase it really does suck, but unfortunately, there is no way to fix your game without going to someone and paying them if they know how to solve the problem. Another problem that occurs in a lot of people's games is their Gameboy's internal clock dying out, and this makes them unable to save any of their games. In order to fix the internal battery, I think that you have to actually take your gameboy apart, and place in a brand new battery if you can get your hands on one. Anyway, you might as well take it to a pawn shop and see if they can fix it, or look in a Gamestop store for Pokemon Crystal since that game has no problems.

Hope this helps.

matt striplin answered:

I had that same problem with my games and one only saved for 2 mins and the other one wouldn't save at all and I got them from Gamestop so I had to return them. I would return the game!!!!!

Zach22 answered:

The same thing happend to me as it did to Decrepitangel. My Poke'mon Crystal game every time I go to play the game it says that my save file is corrupted. I tried starting a new game and saving that and the game says that it saved but when I go to turn it back on it says the same thing. The only thing that I can tell you is to get a new game because there is no way to fix your game unless you go have a professional take a look at it, but that will prove to be expensive and the game is not worth spending that much on it.

Needle nose plyers) And its the internal save battery. a new battery and fine needle nose plyers, and a sautering gun. its tough, but if its not working there is no risk in trying to fix it before throwing it out.
karlh answered:

Hi there is a way you can fix this
I just fixed my Pokemon silver a few minutes ago
Here are the steps
1. The bolt screw thing on the back you need to take out
( Use a small needle nosed plyer)
2.Once you open the game you will see a battery take that out very very carefully
( it will have 2 metal strand attached to the battery one on the top and one on bottom. MAKE SURE NOT TO BREAK OR RIP)
3. Use plyers to take battery out
4. Put in a new battery just like the old one and seal the metal straps also very carefully
5. Place the game chip back in the cartridge and screw the same bolt back on with plyers
6. ENJOY you game
Any questions just talk to me

HI, I just did this exactly right (even checked a youtube vid to see if I was doing it right) but it still doesn't save! It does exactly what it was doing with my old battery, I'm able to load the game in the next 2 min after I saved and turned off and then only "new game" appears on the screen. any suggestions?
Guest answered:

i have nearly every pokemon game out. just got heart gold.

anyway missingno? man look missingno doesnt do that. the worst missingno does is glitches your in game battles, items pokem etc. thats easyly fixable, clearly start a new file!!! anyway karlh is right although u may need solders. m=now i got no idea where to get them other than a computer hardware shop or a manufacture. and these recent comments are Fail. its quite easy not to break the metal. its called being carefull and no what your bloody doin GEEZ KID!!! lol xD

Guest answered:

I just read this blog and fixed mine. Here is what I did:
Removed the screw on the back
Carefully detached the battery from the two metal pieces
Put in another battery from Pokemon red that I wasn't using
Bent the metal pieces so they stayed on the battery
And finally put it back together

Guest answered:

Today's Christmas. I got yellow and Silver. Yellow works perfectly but silver won't save. I'm just a kid, but I might be able to do this.

The load screen where it shows game freak or the new game screen?
Guest said: 15th Feb 2020 | REPORT
Thanks this really helped I thought I would have to take my game boy apart!
Guest answered:

The battery in the cartridge itself is out of juice. So it needs a new one.

Guest answered:

I've got this problem with Pokemon gold... I would open it up too

Guest answered:

I had the same problem and the NES solution worked just fine: take out the carriage, blow into it, put it back, problem solved.

Guest answered:

FYI: Pokemon Silver Automaticly Selfdestructs after 4-5 years by either stop you from loading a save, Leave the area you are in or save.

Stupid, i got this game in 2002, and no selfdestruct.
xOmgItsMe answered:

The only thing I can suggest, is buy an adapter and you will never have to save again. However if there is a storm or power failure, it's not so good. Sorry. That's all I got.

Guest answered:

The battery. Saved games are stored in volatile media in those games (as opposed to non-volatile). The even older games are non-volatile storage so there is no battery to replace. Short story, you need a new battery - CR-2025T if you can find it, but CR-2025 will work too. Careful though, the battery may have pins holding the metal contacts to it that get ripped out and leave little holes in the battery... DANGEROUS!

Guest answered:

To save your game, play Pokemon silver at play R and create an account. Next, go to "your stuff" ( near the controls) while you are playing. Then click saves. It saves your game!

Guest answered:

The Battery on the game is probably out.
You'll need to change it.

Literally you need to open the game cartridge and change the battery that is for the memory.

Google for guides, and do so at your own risk.

Cheers.

Guest answered:

I have a bunch of neodymium magnets because I had a tag on my clothes and apperently they can be used to get those off. Anywho I took those magnets and put them up to the back of the game slid them around then did the same to the front. I can save again and I am then allowed to continue. Hope this helps.
