It does not sound stupid at all. I remember when I first played Pokemon Gold, Pokemon Silver, and Pokemon Crystal I had a hard time finding anything. So, if you have trouble finding something, then I will try my best to help you. To start off, there are Three different fishing rods you can obtain in Pokemon Crystal to help you fish for Pokemon. The Old Rod, the Good Rod, and the Super Rod. The Old Rod is obviously for catching weaker Pokemon while the Super rod is meant for catching stronger Pokemon. Bring out your map, look for an area called Union cave. Now, before that cave, there will be a Pokemon Center. Someone in there will have the Old Rod, and is waiting to give it to you. You can use that for right now. In Pokemon games, you need to talk to everyone you see because you might learn something yseful.

I think to get the super rod, you have to catch a really big magicarp and bring it to some guy in veridian city. You can get another rod from some fishing guy in a house by the lake of rage. Hope this helps,
