Special Gear: Clothing

Latest update by CMBF on May 19th 2013
The BioShock series never followed the traditional tune of large-world action-adventure games with RPG overtones in that, from the very beginning, the development team at Irrational Games resisted the usual XP-based character leveling system in favor of an upgrade process that requires either money, finding and obtaining specific upgrade items, or a combination of both.

The clothing in the game represents a four-slot gear set that provides the player with the ability to add often very powerful abilities and/or capabilities modifications to their skills set, as each item can have different ability focuses that either modify or strengthen their powers.

These bit of gear are found in special boxes;/bags with a very unique appearance that cannot be mistaken as anything other than what they are. More importantly each of these containers is independent of the environment in that while each container is located at a specific place in the world, the actual kit that the player finds upon opening the container is NOT fixed, which means that it will be different each time that the player reloads the checkpoint and claims the contents of the container again. That is a very important aspect, because it can be used to the advantage of the player and in particular in the following situation:

Special Opportunity: In the course of regular game play the player will be presented with numerous opportunities to add a piece of gear to an open slot, or to replace an existing piece of gear with a new and better one, as they find the special gear containers in the world, but there is one spot fairly early in game play at which there is not one but two of the special containers in the same small area and, even more significant, that event takes place very quickly following a checkpoint save.

The area where there are two gear containers close together that appear immediately following a checkpoint save are located in one of the building hallways following your rescue of Elizabeth (and the subsequent partial-destruction of the statue that was her prison) that you reach after falling into the water and being pulled onto the artificial beach at Battleship Bay by Elizabeth.

After you work your way along the boardwalk, then inside the building where you encounter a police checkpoint at which ID is being checked, Elizabeth will pick the lock on the door at the far end of this hall, and you will then work your way through a series of halls until you reach a point where Elizabeth will throw you some Silver Eagles that she has found and point out the nearby Vending Machine, suggesting that you try it out.

This is where the checkpoint has kicked in. At the far end of this hallway is a door that leads to a storage room in which one of the special Gear Containers is located. After claiming the item in THAT container, exit the room back into the hall and take the turn ahead to the right into another hall, where there is a woman who whispers that she wants to help you. Immediately beside her on the narrow table against the wall here is ANOTHER Gear Container!

Empty that and then examine the two items of Gear you have now acquired. If either of them (or with some luck both of them) are items at the top of the list of usefulness, why then all that you need to do is continue on with your adventure until the game auto-saves again. If on the other hand they are NOT what you wanted, simply reload the Last Checkpoint Save and rinse and repeat until you get the item(s) that you DO want. Simple enough, right? And cool too!

That unique set of circumstances will allow the player to almost literally select the best piece of gear that the game has to offer by simply opening the two containers and taking their contents, and then simply reloading the last checkpoint until you obtain the item(s) that you desire the most - and which you can determine by consulting the list below.

I want to add and specifically acknowledge that the following list of special gear, as well as the kit information contained elsewhere in other entries in this Wiki, was obtained through the cheerful and willing assistance of Xbox gamers YvonneBF, Swash01, RUPufnstuf, GSGlenn, Fencer714, and AutumnBF, who collectively make up the LIVE Gamer Crew "Pizza First" and whose cheerful and willing assistance in gathering the information listed below made this a very rapid, pain-free and happy event!

The BioShock Infinite Special Gear Clothing Catalog

In addition to adding a boosted but of power, ability, capacity, or stats to your character, the Gear covered by this page ALSO has an Achievement / Trophy associated with it:

Dress for Success (5G) Equipped a piece of Fear in all four slots.

You should easily end up unlocking this if the two Gear bits you collected earlier ended up being exclusive slots rather than the same slot, as otherwise you will not be in a position to unlock this Achievement here.

Note Please: As noted above, if we missed an item and you found it, please add it to this Wiki page! When adding an item to the specific slot list that has already been created on this page, please be certain that you add it as a List Item using that tag, and that you delete the closing tag for the individual List Item listing because if you leave the closing tag in place at the end of the item line in the listing, doing so will automatically insert a Hard Return or Break which has the effect of creating a new paragraph line, which will break up the list, and that is something we don't want to do.
