Top 10 Free Indie Games

6. Iji

Unlike most of the other titles on this list, Iji isn't experimental, or pushing a unique agenda, or has anything extremely standout about it. Instead, it's simply a good game, and one can never underestimate a fun time in the video game industry.

Iji is quite a bit like a Metroid title: You run around and gun enemy aliens down while exploring a multi-faceted lab. Also, despite the game being split up into levels, there are plenty of secret areas and goodies to give you plenty of reason to explore the area. Of course, there are some differences from the iconic series: You can gain experience from downed enemies and level up, giving you more strength and life for the next level. Later on, you can even make opposing factions of enemies fight each other, doing the hard work for you.

But the best part about Iji is all the different ways you can play it and its effects on the protagonist. You can certainly go in every stage guns blazing, mowing down everything in your path, but then you see the effect that has on a young girl's psyche, and have other thoughts for the next playthrough. You can also complete the entire game without killing a single enemy, though of course that leaves you far weaker than normal and makes every enemy encounter a huge risk. On top of that, certain situations can be altered by things you do in the game, making the narrative flow very smoothly with the gameplay and how you've been playing.
