Know your Enemy

As well as taking the time to know every stat of your own aircraft, so you know it's strengths and weaknesses it is also beneficial to research any enemy planes you encounter that proved to be troublesome. This will enable you to identify their pitfalls and find out what sort of tactics you should employ when you next come across them to get the upper hand and take them down quickly. Knowing the different types of enemy planes will also let you know who to steer clear of and who will be easy prey.

Best Heavy Fighter Tactic

If you are using a heavy fighter in War Thunder one of the best tactics you can use to take down the enemy is the 'boom and zoom'. The basic mechanics of this tactic is you climb to a high altitude and then dive on an enemy below using the speed that you gain during your dive to catch the target. When you are then in range you simply take them down the enemy quickly before they have time to counter-attack. Then once you have eliminated the target you ascend back into the sky and search for your next prey.

The biggest disadvantage of using a heavy fighter is their inability to effectively turn-fight during melee combat with planes that can maneuver with ease. Remaining predominately at high altitudes keeps you safe and employing the 'boom and zoom' is an effective tactic that allows you to easily pick off the dogfighers below.

Do Not Waste Ammunition

It is important to remember that in War Thunder you have limited ammo and lengthy cooldown times. It is therefore essential that you do not waste your ammunition trying to take down enemy planes that are more than 500m away as your shots will be practically be ineffective. Also avoid the temptation to fire for prolonged spells as this will only reduce your accuracy. You will generally find that a couple of well aimed two-second bursts from your machine guns is all that is needed to take down enemy planes.

Avoid Head-on Firefights

Regardless of how will you think your aerial ballet skills are it is in your best interests to avoid head-on a firefight with enemy planes as more than likely you will take damage, even if you are quick enough to duck out of a fiery collision at the last instant.

Whenever you see an enemy plane coming straight at you immediately get out of the way and maneuver your plane so that when you do engage in combat you hold the positional advantage. This means ideally attacking the enemy from their flank where they are most vulnerable.

Play to your Strengths

Make sure you are familiar with the stats of your plane, so you avoid your weaknesses. It is recommended that you spend time thoroughly going through your plane's stat in the hangar to identify whether it is in your best interests to perform aerial ballet in closely fought dogfights or to stay in the safety of the cloud line and pick off targets from a distance.

Basically, if you are flying a nimble turn-fighter it is more to your advantage to stay close and engage in a dogfight with your target as you will be easy prey from a distance and conversely if you are using a heavy fighter your main concern is preserving your energy during attacking runs and avoid turning as doing so will cause you to lose momentum.
