Okay so I have their special skills and shit like that. But no matter what I go I can activate them. And it driving me insane. How do I activate them? Am I missing something? Am I doing it wrong by any chance?

Make sure you have Over Limit 3 or higher active, and that you're triggering the Mystic Arte with an Arcane Arte/Altered Arte. Just hold your melee button right after using your arte, no need to let the arte finish and there's no need to try and match up your timing this way.
