How can I get on xbox live don't you need a cord but if so I need a longer one?

To get Xbox LIVE you must buy a code from the website (using a credit card) or by buying a card in shops which have the code on them. Depending on how long you want it, the more it costs. (For the average year, it costs around 60 Euro).
And yes, you need a cord supplied with your Xbox console. It connects from the back of the machine to the back of your modem into an ethernet slot. If your current cord is too small you can buy a wireless adapter (which is much dearer) that plugs into the back of your console, and picks up a signal from your modem to enable online play.
Also remember : Xbox LIVE is not available in all countries, so check the website to see if your country is eligible.
