Unfortunately F.E.A.R. 3 is another game wherein the publisher chose to go with the now ubiquitous “Pass Code” scheme for online play.

Basically what that means is that the game -- when purchased new -- comes with a paper insert that has the multi-player pass code printed on it. You redeem it the same way that you redeem DLC codes, by hitting the Guide Button then left on the D-Pad to the Games and Apps Blade and selecting Redeem Codes, then entering the one-time-use code.

Once you redeem the code you have full access to the online and multi-player side of the game. But if you obtained the game either by purchasing it used or via a rental like GameFly, you don't have that code do you?

In that case the only options you have are (1) not to play multi-player online, or (2) spend the real-world money (it costs $9.99) though to be fair in addition to unlocking the multi-player modes that pass also gives you six map (three for each game mode) so that is sort of a bonus?

The Pass is sold via the game's Live Marketplace page for $9.99 (what used to be 800 Microsoft Points) and I think it is also available for PS3 for the same price via PSN though I don't play the game on that platform...
