Save up rounds for your pump shotgun, and make sure that it is fully loaded, then do head shots on the group that attacks in quick succession for three or four one-shot-one-kill kills, then switch to your BEST melee weapon and continue bashing heads and you will quickly take out the group without the Shaman getting too much damage. This is essential so that you begin the journey with him in good health.
