Creative Mode is unlocked with the Promo Code on the main menu of the original Castle Miner -- it costs 80 Microsoft Points (or it's equal in real-world money which is just $1) to purchase.
The Promo Codes in the game are randomized - which means that they only work ONCE. So if your mate uses theirs and then shares the code with you, it is not going to work for you.
However the codes are Gamertag or User specific so that same person can reuse their old codes over and over again
