There is a pad in the middle of the village which isn't activated so I can't spring to another area, according to walkthroughs etc killing all the enemies activates it, but it doesn't seem to have done so, tried several times now, totally stuck, any ideas? All the walkthrough/screenshots show a muddy marsh village that I don't have, there is very little to my village and no way of going behind the houses on rafts or anything, one walkthrough did suggest that the wii version is a bit different, but there ended the help...

I had the same problem. For me it was an enemy (a chompy I think) that was hidden behind some trees in the North East part of the village. I think it got stuck somewhere and the trees blocked it from view. If you don't have a bad guy there move around the village edges attacking. You'll kill something eventually and unlock the gate.
