Ok, How exactly do you unlock characters? Is it story mode, Missions or what?

It's both
Some of the characters you unlock in mission mode
Some you unlock in story ( do them on different difficulty levels)
And some you unlock by doing battles if you complete 800 battles you unlock everyone

I've unlocked characters by battling, but I know that you can with missions and story mode as well.

People have already submitted ways of unlocking characters on the cheats, and user submitted cheats and hints
