The star is their ranking determined by the lowest grand prix ranking that they received on all the grand prix they won in single player mode. Only star rankings count to be show next to your name. For instance, if you got stars on every race, which you have to in order to unlock everything, you would have a star next to your name on WFC. You would only have a two star next to your name if you got at least all two star rankings on all grand prix. Even if you get a couple three stars you would have a two star ranking because that is the lowest you received.
Get a star ranking in grand prix for all cups in all grand prix modes. The star rank is even harder to get and is above A rank.
