Ah, Wario, you've tickled our funny bones with your crass humor, provided countless hours of minigame fun, and served as a rival for Mario in all of his sports outings. You are among the most widely recognized of video game characters, so isn't it time you received your very own adventure game? Well, your wish and many others has been granted, and it just falls short of something great.
In a word, this game is beautiful, both technologically and artistically. The worlds are totally unique, colorful, and none disappoint. Animations are also superb. Pile driving a pterodactyl has never been so fluid and fun to watch. The best part is that all of this great stuff happens at a speedy framerate without a hiccup to be found.
Don't come to this game expecting it to sound like a Mario title. Almost everything is different, from the music to the sound effects. You won't find any of those iconic Mario tunes, or anything that you can hum to yourself for that matter. Still, Wario's nasty voice and the "ching ching" of collecting coins is satisfying enough.
Just like the sound, the gameplay in Wario World is not reminiscent of typical Mario gameplay. In fact, what you will find here mostly resembles the gameplay of a beat 'em up title. You will fight hordes of enemies by punching, pile driving and throwing baddies at one another. It's super fun and rather brutal for a game that looks so comical at first glance.
Once all is said and done, there's treasure, spritelings, and gold Wario statue parts to collect. You may have also missed some puzzle rooms in some levels, which are always fun to find and solve. But the reality is that if you aren't motivated by greed and finding fortune, there isn't a whole lot of reason for you to return to Wario World.
Wario World is a solid title, but it lacks a sense of exploration and accomplishment at times. It is fun to bash your enemies' skulls in, but there isn't enough reward for doing so. In short, it's fun while it lasts, but it doesn't last as long as it could.
