It's been 20 years since the legendary hedgehog we know as Sonic was released into the world with the first game to come out with the Genesis as simply, Sonic the Hedgehog. As years went by, Sonic was rising to the top, but he has hit with a rough patch within the last few years, with Sonic Heroes being quite frustrating to the horrible Sonic '06 release that should be shot. Leaving off of the story of Sonic Colors, Sonic is celebrating his 20th birthday when the Time Eater comes and takes all of his friends away.
The graphics are not the high standard in the game, but they didn't underdo it or overdo it, it seemed just right for this game. Seeing some of the past levels re-done from the past was a nostalgic feeling and seeing how far Sonic has come. There is nothing to really complain about with the graphics, as the engine is the one off of Sonic Colors.
The sound was great. Why? Because they were all recycled. They used sound boards from all the other games, tuned them to be in this one and it feels like you're playing the old ones. From the original springs sounds to the old music that plays in the levels you unlock, you will feel right at home playing this.
I absolutely loved the gameplay when playing this. Switching between Classic and Modern Sonic was a lot of fun, and the levels that were re-made were perfect. You feel right at home playing these old levels. They are different of course, they are not the same exact walkthrough as the old levels, but almost the same concept. Facing old and new bosses were fun, and once the game is beaten, there is a hard mode for all the bosses. There are 90 challenges to choose from and there are skills you can even use to help yourself along the way. Why is the gameplay a perfect 10? Simple controls, and you can unlock what made Sonic famous: the first Sonic the Hedgehog game.
If you are an old Sonic fan just like me, this game can last forever. Playing the first Sonic game can make you lose time, and the old levels have different paths to explore. There are 90 challenges that have to be accomplished and getting S rank for all the levels have to be done. The game lasts because it's nostalgic, you want to see more.
The game gets a nine out of ten, because it's simply fun. The game is not actually crap, it's fun. With the concept of this game involving time, it was perfect for how this story went. This game got great reception and we might possibly see DLC for it. With how this ends, Sonic can finally take a leave from 3D for a while before his head is wanted again, and go back to 2D for a while.
