Unpacking is a game about the familiar experience of pulling possessions out of boxes and fitting them into a new home. Part block-fitting puzzle, part home decoration, you are invited to create a satisfying living space while learning clues about the life you’re unpacking. Here are our best tips and tricks to play this fun and creative game.

Unpacking Tips and Tricks

How do you prepare your items before unpacking?

When unpacking a lot of items, you'll want to do some organization first before putting things in their place. A good way for you to be able to do this is to sort your items on the ground so you can see them easier.

You can sort them either by group in terms of how you use them, or perhaps you're the type that likes to group by size. For example, if you're in a home office, you can put the items on the floor and group them such as books, stationery, tools, accessories, electronics, and more. This can make things easier for you to put away as well.

How will I know if I placed an item in the wrong spot?

Unpacking will involve placing a lot of different things on their correct locations, and this can mean that there are multiple spots which are allowable. In order to clear a level, all items must be placed correctly, so you will need to know how to see if there's any mistakes.

If an item that you place is in the wrong location, it will have a red/white outline on it. You can try it yourself for example, such as placing the TV on the floor. With this in mind, try your best to unpack your items and try to remember which logical place things should be in.

How can I get Dark Star mode?

Unpacking is a game that lets you organize your items in order to fit different rooms in your home. This means that there are a lot of items available for you to move around, and they have designated areas. If you want a challenge, then you'll want to do the dark star mode.

This is a hidden game mode where you move your items to a place where it's not meant to be. This will give your item a red or white outline as an indicator. For example, you place the TV on the floor instead of a table. The goal of dark star mode is to place all items in a level in an invalid place. You will get a dark star for that level, as well as a unique note for your album.

Why can't I hang the blue sweater in the closet?

The items that you'll find in unpacking can be quite interesting in terms of looks. Since they are pixel art in nature, there may be times where you will mistake an item for another, making it difficult for you to place things correctly.

For example, you might find a blue turtleneck knitted sweater that is folded on the floor. You try to place it in a hanger or closet, but it won't work. So, what gives? Some items in the game can easily be mistaken such as this sweater, since it's actually a hot water bottle. It's an item where you put hot water inside and you can place it on yourself to keep you warm or if you need it when you're sick. Keep this in mind with some items of the game.

What can I do if I don't understand what a small item is?

Since unpacking different items will come in a lot of sizes, there may be instances where you are trying to place small items but you do not know what they are. This can be a problem if you're trying to group your items first before placing them in the correct locations.

If you check your interface, there's a zoom feature on the corner with + and - buttons. Try to zoom in on your smaller items so you can tell what they are. This can be helpful especially for areas with a lot of items such as the kitchen, or the living room.

What can you do if one item can't fit in the drawer?

There are some levels in the game such as the kitchen where you will have a lot of small items that you need to place properly on a drawer. Perhaps you'll try adding them all in, but you get left with one item that can't be placed anywhere else.

What this usually means is that you will need to reorganize the items that you placed in the drawer. Try to put items in different combinations in order to make your last item fit properly. For example, you might have a drawer with some measuring spoons and cups, as well as other kitchen items, but you still have a spatula remaining. Move around the items in your drawer until you find a combination to make space for the spatula.

Why can't I Dark Star 2010?

In Dark Star Mode, you will need to place items in the wrong areas in order for you to complete the mode and get a dark star for that level. In 2010, you will have different areas where you try to put things in the wrong place but you still can't get a dark star, so what gives?

Some levels in the game can hide items easily. For example, try to check the bedroom level and look at the closet. If you look at the door on the left, near the hinge, there may be a hanger there that you have missed. Some closets in the game can hide things in plain sight, so be careful when trying to find them.

What is this item with a black handle, is it makeup?

Some items are really hard to distinguish even if you try to zoom in on them. One item in particular is needed in a specific challenge, and they need to be grouped together. If you see an item with a black handle and a silver base, you might wonder what it is. Is it a bottle for makeup? Is it a tiny dumbbell? What if you haven't seen this item in real life before?

If you see an black handle with a silver base, this is actually an espresso tamper. It's an item used to tighten coffee grounds into small pucks that can be used on your espresso machine. This can be hard to see in-game especially if you're not familiar with the item. This item is also needed for in-game achievements relating to making coffee, so keep this in mind!
