Total War: Three Kingdoms is a real-time turn-based strategy game set in Ancient China at the start of the Han dynasty's collapse in 190 AD. The objective of the game is to rise to the position of Emperor and unite all provinces under a single, imperial rule. You have a choice between 12 different generals to start your journey with, each has a specific trait that makes them a viable option to become emperor of China and each has unique units that give them an advangtage in specific battles.

Total War: Three Kingdoms features two game modes. The first is 'Romance', which is based on the novel 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms', in which generals are gifted with superhuman strength. The second is 'Records', a more historically authentic version which is based on 'Records of the Three Kingdoms', a Chinese historical text which covers the history of the late Eastern Han dynasty (184–220 CE) and the Three Kingdoms period (220–280 CE).

Creating Armies

You will be able to conduct successful military opertions at the start of the game with one army consisting of 15-16 units. Don't create another army until you are able to maintain the growth of gold at 1,000 pieces per turn. Check out our How to Steal Characters page to find out how you can get the best characters and units for your retinue.

Rest Wounded Units

Wounded units do not perform as well as healthy ones so it your army has just fought a battle it is advised that you give wounded units a few round to regenerate before using them againg to launch another offensive.

Don't Exhaust Units

Under normal conditions units enter battle as rested and tire out by fighting. Exchausted troops are far less efficient in battle and they will have decreased morale. If your unit has to march a long distance before a battle you need to ensure you give them adequate time to recover before using them to engage the enemy.

Learn the Types of Units

Cavalry, crosssbowmen, spearman are just some of the different types of troops in the game and to be successful in battles it is important that you know how to use them effectively in combat. Learn the strengths and weaknesses of each type of unit by reading their descriptions. Check out our How to Unlock Units page to learn the different methods you can use to increase your army.

Explore the Battlefield

Before each battle carefully inspect the battlefield to find ways that you can take advantage of the environment. Things to look for include trees to conceal the position of your units and hills which will allow your archers to shoot farther than the enemies archers.

Protect Ranged Units

Although ranged units and seige weapons are great for dealing damage against the enemy from afar they have one major weakness and that is they are vulnerable if left stranded without any portection. Make sure you always keep 1-2 units around to stop the attack of enemy units and give you time to send reinforcements.

Flank the Enemy

The best strategy to employ against the enemy is to flank them. Flanking the enemy means attacking them from the sides or from behind. Enemy units engaged from all sides will quickly collapse and retreat from the battlefield. Flanking the enemy will have an extremely negative impact on the morale of the enemy units.

Generals

Although generals are a powerful unit that are capable of decimating the enemy it is advised that you don't send them alone against an entire enemy army as an outnumbered general can be defeated easily. Generals are best used for supporting troops on the battlefield. Check out our Best General Guide to find out who the best leader in Total War: Three Kingdoms is.
