Xbox Series X, PC
Last Updated: by Dennis

The Medium is a third-person psychological horror game set in post-Communism Poland where you play the role of Marianne, a medium who can travel into the spirit realm. Haunted by the vision of a child's murder, you travel to an abandoned hotel resort, which many years ago became the stage of an unthinkable tragedy. Being able to inhabit both worlds aids puzzle solving. Marianne's psychic abilities may also be used against hostile forces and are recharged by interacting with energy spots called spirit wells. The Medium is available on Xbox Series X and PC. Take a look at our tips to get help in the game.

How to Escape the Maw

The first time you encounter the Maw will be while you are exploring the Niwa hotel when he will chase you through the resort. There are also several other times during The Medium you will find yourself being chased by this monster. There are though some things you can do to make handling this creature easier.

The most important thing to take into consideration is that the Maws ability to track you is different in the two worlds. In the material world you can easily avoid the Maw which is blind by crouching and holding your breath, when you do so it will not be able to detect you. In the spirit world however the Maw is able to see clearly which makes it more difficult to avoid. The best way here to avoid The Maw is to move slowly making sure you know where the creature is at all times. If you are unsure as to it's whereabouts you can always look down at your flashlight which will begin to flicker as The Maw gets closer. If The Maw manages to get close you can always put some distance between it by using your Spirit Blast ability and then running away while it is stunned. This though should only be done as a last resort.

Wear Headphones

It is recommended that you wear headphones to play The Medum as it will help you to better hear the footsteps of the Maw when it approaches, the Maw is a deadly monster that is able to track you through both the living and the spirit realms and will stop at nothing.

Wearing headphones will also help you hear the whispers of spirits when you explore the Niwa Hotel and find items that have traces of people who once stayed there. When this happens glowing gashes will appear on the item and if you are close enough to one of these objects you will be able to hear the spirits whispering.

Explore Places Thoroughly

It is crucial that you explore each of the places you visit thoroughly as each location either has an item you need or gives valuable insight into the plot. The Niwa Hotel in particular has plenty of objects to examine and many of them hide useful pieces of information that will not only help you to complete the game but also enable you to experience the full story of The Medium.

Collect Echoes, Notes, Diaries, and Postcards

Hidden throughout the Niwa Hotel and it's grounds are collectibles which will give you hints as to what really happened. In order to fully understand the story you need to each of them. Collecting them all will also enable you to unlock the An Unknown Outcome, Followed the Trail, Calling Out to Me, All That's Left Unsaid, Devouring Darkness, and Puzzling Out the Past achievements. Take a look at the video below to see the location of each of the collectibles in The Medium.

Keep Track of Marianne's Spirit Power Level

It is essential that you continually pay attention to Marianne's spirit power level in order to keep track of the amount of spirit power she has available. Whenever Marianne is in the spirit world you will be able to determine how much spirit power Marianne has remaining by looking at the white rings around her arm which will slowly decrease as she uses her spirit power and increase when you recharge them at a spirit well.

Pay Attention to Both Worlds

Marianne is a has the ability to inhabit both the material and a spirit realm, and it is important in The Medium that you remember to pay attention to what is happening in each of them to move the story along.

If you find yourself stuck it is more than likely because you have forgotten to do something in one of the worlds which means in order to progress you will need to retrace your steps and carefully examine both versions of a room in order to find the missing solution.
