Tekken 8 Cheats and Tips

Learn about the game's controls

Tekken 8 is a fighting game that focuses on different kinds of martial arts as well as personal fighting styles. It's a 3D fighter that not only lets you move left and right, but you can also side step to the foreground and background. Unlike other fighters that have different buttons for punches and kicks, Tekken 8 is the kind of game where one button corresponds to one limb.

If you check out the game's controls, you have inputs for your left punch, right punch, left kick, and right kick. If you are playing on Playstation consoles, that would mean the following: Square (Left Punch), Triangle (Right Punch), X (Left Kick), Circle (Right Kick). Xbox consoles have X(Left Punch), Y (Right Punch), A (Left Kick), B(Right Kick). With this in mind, different inputs will lead you to different attacks. Each character has their own set of moves that you'll be able to find in their move list at practice mode.

Play Arcade Quest if you're a pure beginner

In the history of Tekken, you mostly get to learn about the game through your own personal experience. However, in Tekken 8, a single player mode called Arcade Quest is added in order to help beginners learn about how Tekken works. In this mode, you'll get to play your own avatar and learn the basics of Tekken while going through your own story in order to progress forward.

You'll get to choose your main character to fight with, and from there you'll be provided with some tutorials about the game such as controls, the heat system, how to make a combo, and much more. These tutorials can also be looked up to when needed, and you can also be given in-game tips that will appear as you progress in this mode.

Pick a fighter and do their combo challenges

With a starting roster of 32 characters with varying fighting styles, one of the things that you will do as a beginner player is to find your main character. Even if all fighters have similar things to do such as punching and kicking, their fighting styles vary and their combos will look different. You can check trailers of each character online to see how they fight, but a good way for you to learn a character is through the combo challenges.

In order to do combo challenges, open up the menu in practice mode and look for the combo challenges tab. From there, you'll be provided with a list of combos that you can do which will help you learn how a character works. Completing combo challenges can help you understand the basics of each character, as well as checking out if their fighting style is fit for your liking. Hopefully you'll find one that you can have as your main character so you can focus on learning their moves.

Learn the combo notations used in Tekken

Each fighting game community has their set of notations that is used in learning combos. For example, some games use numbers for knowing which direction you'll press plus the button. However, in Tekken, the notations are a mixture of letters and numbers (This is mostly the case for western players). For directional inputs, you can memorize the following:

  • u = Up
  • d = Down
  • b = Back
  • f = Forward
  • qcb/qcf = Quarter circle back / Quarter circle forward
  • 1 = Left Punch
  • 2 = Right Punch
  • 3 = Left Kick
  • 4 = Right Kick

The notations above can be mixed so you'll know which buttons to input such as uf (up forward) or df (down forward) for example. The rest of the combo notations will use numbers which correspond to the different punches and kicks. Commas are then added to let you know that you'll input another move. By keeping that in mind, you can look at combo guides online and it might look like this for example: uf 4, f 3 4, b 1+2 which means Up forward right kick, Forward left kick right kick, back left punch + right punch.

Play Super Ghost Battle

Super Ghost Battle is an offline game mode that lets you pick a character in order to challenge different CPU characters non-stop. The characters that you fight have different ranks which will determine their difficulties. It's a good way for you to practice things you have learned such as doing combos in the game. This will also let you increase your own offline rank for that character. Playing through this mode using different characters can help you practice which combos can work or not, or you can use it as your warm up before you try matching up versus other players online.

Remember the different hit properties of moves

Aside from knowing the different limbs that are used by the characters in the game, each type of move that they have has specific properties. If you're in practice mode and have hit properties on, doing attacks will let you know what kind of attack you're doing. Attacks can be considered high, mid, or low and can affect if your opponent will be able to hit you.

High attacks can be blocked by holding back, and they can be ducked if you press down or down back.

Mid attacks can be blocked by holding back, and they can hit opponents who duck. Low attacks on the other hand can't be blocked by holding back, but you need to hold down and back at the same time which makes your character crouch. By learning this, you can know which move to use depending on how your opponent guards your attacks. For example, if they have a tendency to hold back to guard, you can use low attacks to cause damage. This also goes the same for the opposite, if you know that your opponent loves to use high moves, you can duck and then attack back.

Remember that grabs can be broken out of

There are some characters in Tekken such as King with gameplay that can involve a lot of grabs. Majority of the grabs in the game can be ducked, but there are other times where there are grabs that can be done if you're crouching (which again, is a thing that King can do). If you check a character's command list in the game and check their throws, you can see which input you can press in order to break the grab. Breaking a grab refers to you inputting a button after an opponent grabs you. If you press the correct button, you will be able to get away from your opponent and the grab will be canceled.

Aside from memorizing throw breaks from the command list, you can look at your opponent and see which arm they're trying to reach out. If they reach out with their left arm, this usually means you need to input 1 (Left Punch), if you see them reach out their right arm then you need to input 2 (Right Punch). There are also command grabs where both arms are used, so you need to input 1+2 (Left Punch + Right Punch) to break from them. Learning the basics of breaking from grabs will help you avoid easy damage, and it can definitely help you improve if you are playing in ranked.

Don't forget to remap your controls

Aside from directional inputs as well as the four main buttons for punching and kicking, your controller or keyboard has more buttons that you can use in order to add additional functions. For example, when using your controllers, you also have your shoulder buttons available as well as L3 and R3 (clicking the joysticks). You can add additional inputs for these such as your Heat engager, Rage Art, or perhaps combinations of buttons such as 1+3 and 2+3 which are throws, or perhaps combinations of punches and kicks for easier inputs. A lot of moves in the game require pressing two buttons at the same time, so you can map it to one button instead for easier access. You can do all of this in the game's main page and check under options, and then controller setup.
