Carry a Rock

Before you can unlock any of the weapons in Spelunky 2 rocks will be your best friend and you should carry one at all times. Spelunky 2 teaches you at the start of the game how to pick up rocks and throw them around which you will need to do to clear areas of enemies. Rocks can also be used to set off traps. Make sure when you are lobbing rocks around they do not bounce back and stun you as this will result in the loss of a unit of health.

How to Use your Free Items

You begin each run of Spelunky 2 with four ropes and four bombs which the game will give to you free. As both of these items are limited you need to make sure you use them carefully. Ropes can be used to traverse up or down any given area which makes them very useful for escaping sticky situations and bombs can be used to open up shortcuts in levels, find hidden money, take down enemies, and help reach trapped pets.

How to Spend your Money in Spelunky 2

Tucked away in caves in some of the levels of Spelunky 2 you will find little shops that will allow you to spend the money you may have found while progressing through the level. The items you will be able to spend it on include more bombs, climbing gloves, and a jetpack. Avoid the temptation of spending your cash on firearms as they are not worth the asking price as the rocks you find in the game to throw do the same job and are free. Instead invest your money in items that improve your ability to explore a level as they will help you to find more hidden goodies.

Look Down to Plan Ahead

Spelunky 2 is a 2D platform game where you descend through levels and it is essential that you know what obstacles lie below so you can plan how to takle them. You need to pay particular attention to the dart traps, these are grey square blocks found embedded in the wall where being hit by their dart will result in losing two units of health. You can easily avoid them by triggering them with an object (rock) dropped in front of them. To make Anna look down you simply have to hold down on your controller so she crouches and the camera pans down to show what lies below.

Always Rescue Pets

You begin a run in Spelunky with four units of health and there is a free extra health unit available on every level in the form of a pet that needs rescuing. The animal you will come across will depend on what you picked in the options and can be a cat, dog, or hamster. It is worthwhile taking the time to try and rescue these animals and take them to the exit of a level as the extra health you are rewarded allows you to make more mistakes. Pets can also be used take down enemies or trigger traps making your journey through any given level easier.
