The Captain is your Most Important Crew Member
In Space Crew the single most important member of your crew is your captain. The captain is responsible for the spaceship piloting and evasion from enemy fire, setting waypoints and choosing the navigating approach between offensive and defensive that impacts on battles. Without your captain piloting your ship it will not move or dodge making it an easy target for the enemy. If your captain has to go to the medical for any reason it is essential that someone, even if it is a rookie is in the captains chair guiding the ship until they return.
Your captains skills are based around piloting and whenever you engage in combat with the enemy their defensive stance will boost your ships evasion by 10%, which is why it should by your default stance. You can prevent a lot of damage to your ship if you select your objective, speed up time and then then jump into defensive stance the moment time slows.
How to get More Firepower
If you want to get more firepower for your ship you should place your secruity officer either on the front gun so they have quick access to the security station so they can easily deal with shield replenishing or going into stealth mode, or alternately put them on the middle gun with a phase rifle placed for taking out Phasmids.
You may also want to consider placing your engineer or comms officer on the guns. If your ship is mostly using non-energy weapons your engineer is a good choice as they will be able to use their 'boost' skill to put more power into your weapons. If you decide to place your comms officer on the guns they will be able to quickly hop back to their own station for route planning.
How to Level Up
Completing missions in Space Crew will provide you with Research and Credits, the amount you recieve as a reward is determined by the difficulty of the mission you completed. Research enables you to unlock new equipment for your and ship and crew and Credits allows you to buy the new goodies unlocked by Research. To level up you will need XP and you will not recieve that by completing missions.
To earn XP in Space Crew you will need destroy the enemy and in order to do this you will need to engage in combat as you complete the missions. Most of the missions in Space Crew will have a safe path and a fast path. A safe path is longer and will have less enemies than a fast path which will have less jumps but you will encounter a lot more enemies. Taking the fast path will enable you to earn XP a lot quicker providing you survive. Early in the game leveling up your crew is your main priority so make sure you milk those early missions and leave no enemy alive.

How to Abort Missions
Don't be afraid to 'Abort' the mission if you feel that you will not survive another battle. This is something you should do if your med bay guage is empty or you are out of med packs. The abort button can be found on the Captain's station and if you do decide to return home you will retain the XP you have earned so far and also more importantly keep your ship and crew.
